Very few have flood insurance. Many of the badly affected areas are not in flood plains and have never flooded before (or have flooded on extremely rare occasions like twice in the last century).

My thought is that the mayor did not issue an evac order to avoid another Rita incident. You saw pics of the highway leading in/out of Houston that was under feet of water? If people got stuck on that highway for 13+ hrs like with Rita, it would have been a different kind of catastrophe.

Also I'm betting that Irma will hit (((NYC))). They're long overdue for a major hurricane like this. The model has it hitting Nova Scotia, but so? Week-out forecasts are unreliable at best. Anyway, it's close. If it hits as a Category 3, which it probably will based on the model, it'll be worse than Katrina. That storm didn't make landfall in a heavily-populated area, and the only reason it caused so much damage was the levee failures. There are no levees in New York City. At least, not in Manhattan. Even if it hits Long Island it'll still be terrible because those houses weren't built with hurricanes in mind. Then again, they'll probably tell people to evacuate with Harvey having been just a week earlier. Or not.

I can only speak to mine and my parents neighborhood but the map does NOT show the current flood levels for those areas. They announced at the press conference they would start the dam release at 2am ( no rescues are conducted at night). they released the water just after midnight with NO warning. People closest to th bayou said their homes started to fill in MINUTES. for context I live on east of hwy 6 right where the main release gate is. The Coast Guard starting pulling people out monday before the release in the back of my area. When I went today all the evacs were being handled by citizens. I realize there are no hard rules here, but I get genuinely confused when posts use greentext outside of the context of a quote or story. It's not exactly a strain on the brain, but it when people should attempt to be as clear as possible when writing. I genuinely care about this site as a whole and want posts to be a higher quality. Some boards have gotten better over time while others, like /pol/ have gotten worse, likely due to the influx of people from other sites that don't understand things like board culture and how to greentext properly. I ignored that other guy because i don't respond to bait.

one of my friends (and old /new/sman) is starting a water restoration business, got his ASD certification and everything. Harvey was just a coincidence. he's headed down next week to pump out water, do demo work, dehumidification etc. I might go with him.
