With as bad as hurricanes have been getting recently, I have an idea for our foreign aid budget. Start investing in terraforming the Sahara. Plant lots of heat resistant crops, massive scale irrigation, seed clouds to induce rain over the area, shrink the desert or even outright destroy it. Without the Sahara there will be a huge drop in the number of Hurricanes, in the long run we could even save money by preventing future disasters.

It will also serve as a great proof of concept for terraforming other planets.

Crude prices have been generally in the 45-55 $/bbl range for the last year, with the market in a period of oversupply. The lack of gulf refining capability is going to further bottleneck crude turnover which will drive down crude prices. This will fuck over every country relying on crude for their economy and possibly trigger civil unrest. Venezuela could be fucked.

Meanwhile refined gas will be in undersupply and the price will jack up. Literally everything will get more expensive. Any kind of travel, the cost of driving anywhere, anything made of plastic, anything relying on vehicle transport (ie your groceries), that's all going to get more expensive.

Historically when there have been periods of refined oil shortage, the economy suffers but the silver lining is that US refiners make bank. Not the case this time.

I would disagree. US refined gas reserves are already being opened, and they will likely not make up for the lack of refining capability. Especially since the US can't unload all their reserves, they need to retain a large portion for strategic purposes.

Already some European companies have sent out oil carrying ships to the US, anticipating shortage. However these ships will take weeks to reach the US. They're a marker of coming instability rather than short term relief.
