I'd actually argue that ocean life provides examples of why we'd expect alien life to be wildly different. For example octopi can manipulate objects with their tentacles, and dolphins communicate and hunt with echo-location. It would be expected that different planets have different mixes of environments, with different pressures encouraging different traits. Kind of like how the ocean encourages the development of fins and land the development of legs, a planet with stronger/weaker gravity, more heat, stronger winds, could encourage the development of different features overall.

Id argue that there still seem (key word, what we can know, not especulation but actual observation) to be limitations on "survivable" environments, which singificantly reduce the amount of possible differences in life's development. By going fully evolutionary, this means that there is a very reduced "blueprint" for creatures to evolve around. The very essence of life also reduces the functional spectrum of creatures. I think to assume that aliens will look a lot like us, you need to assume the basics of our biochemistry will be quite similar. And honestly, I'm fairly certain that's impossible, given how insanely complex life is on a microscopic level.

In terms of the 5 fingers example, the bare bones reason why that seems to be the case is because it is the most stable way to manipulate a variety of objects given the type of appendages land-based mammals have evolved. However, looking at a lot of tech we have today, we're beginning to see some working alternatives to the approach we ourselves use. We can't expect other life to be as mechanical, but to have a similar form as these machines? I wouldn't say it's out of the question.

Not to mention that all mammals have very similar appendages, and that's not due to chance. It's because we're more related than people generally seem to realize, with a lot of common traits evolving due to a limited selection of possibilities due to the already existing, evolved parameters. Aliens won't be limited by those same parameters, due to not being genetically related.

They literally look like this, they have some sort of shielding shit they throw up during the day but they always come out at 9-10 and stay all night long. If I were to suspend my opinion and concede on this one point, at the very least I would say that if they were humanoid they'd be ugly as fuck. To me the most outlandish thing about the idea of humanoid aliens is that people often assume they're attractive. In fact I think outlandish aliens might be a more welcome sight than humanoid ones, since we've evolved to have a deep hatred of ugly looking or deformed people. I only say this because ultimately our definition of attractive is super narrow and particular; sometimes to the millimeter. There's variation for sure, but it's not that big a margin. We can learn to love or appreciate people born deformed but we often have to fight a darker, more primal part of our nature to do so.
