When my (now deceased) Mother was a Child during WW2 a German pilot shot down over London landed in her back garden. They invited him in, gave him a cup of tea, and called the MP's. It was all very polite and respectful.

great granpa was tanker for the SU ww2, was switched around driver/commander alot. Drove every t-34 that saw combat since the 1939 mode to the 34-85. A great uncle of mine, however, had a great time going after Hitler and the boys. He also took tons of trophies off dead krauts and brought them home. He got his kids really interested in the military and one of them joined the CIA/FBI or something.

An uncle of mine who was in Vietnam was in charge of a tank. He got tired of being ambushed by Norks, so he decided "Fuck it" and started following the South Koreans around since he never heard about them getting ambushed. He described those last few months of the war as "vacation."

Another uncle of mine who was in Vietnam fished a grenade out of a tank before it exploded. He saved a couple of guys and got a medal for it.

My Great Great Uncle was the first person out of Jackson County Michigan to enlist during World War I. Being Scots, he went up to Canada and joined the 2nd Canadian Expeditionary Forces, where he was assigned to the Black Watch. He later died in Belgium when he threw himself on a German hand grenade that had rolled into the trench, in order to save the other men in his unit. My grandmother had the gold pocket watch that was sent home along with his other personal belongings. It still had a piece of shrapnel embedded in it. Not sure whatever happened to it, I was supposed to inherit it after my grandmother passed away, but nobody seems to know where it is.

Ok, here's another one. My step grandfather told everyone shortly before he passed away that he was on a troop transport in the Pacific the day the second atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, and orders came over the intercom for all hands to go below deck and wait for the all clear. He says everyone saw a brief flash of white light come through the portholes and through every seam in the boat, and that he could see through his fingers like an X-ray for a split second. After the formal surrender of Japan, his unit went ashore to survey the damage and he said you could see the outlines of people's shadows burned into the pavement where they had been standing the exact instant they were hit by the fireball.
