If recent memory serves this is kind of a repeat of Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. And if you want to look at it from the other side it's likely what happened with the Tea Party (at least the larger part of it).

These large puppet groups serve an immediate need, but when they grow beyond the influence of the controlling interest or stop aiming themselves in the correct direction they cut the strings and wait for the group to wind down.

I remember digging through webrings to find obscure wargaming articles that everyone talked about but nobody ever linked to directly- now the search engines control access, it's hard to find things that aren't on very old torrents or shared through the imageboards.
