White seems to lack, nowadays, a clearly defined, objective definition.

My contact with the word when growing up was mainly through hollywood films, where it is used to contrast people of European ancestry from those of African, Asian or Mesoamerican origins. Given I also contrast with people from those places, and I'm of European ancestry, I naturally aligned myself with the 'white' group.

It's not that easy, though. White is a term coined by the English to refer to themselves, in contrast to not only people of other continents but also from people of other countries in Europe. In its traditional sense, an Englishman sees himself as 'white', but not an Italian or even a Swedish man. Given the genetic connection, I think Germanic people might also have been called 'white' (for example, German immigrants in America) but I'm not sure. Take note those others might actually have lighter skin. Skin tone doesn't dictate in its most traditional meaning who is white.

Then it seems the word started being used to refer to people of European ancestry and lighter skin tones (anglos, nords, germans, slavs, basically anyone not med), and some people even use it as a synonym of Caucasic. It would include all the groups mentioned before, including European meds, plus North Africans, Middle Easterns, possibly central Asians... in current USA it even includes mestizos.

In my opinion, the broader and the less accurate the meaning of the word, the less value it has. The leaf here wants to equate it to our common (and wrong) understanding of what Romans called "barbarians". I'm ok with that. We already have a word for anglos anyway.

Even though as a kid I identified as white, at this point and having a better understanding of the original meaning of the word I'm comfortable not being considered one, although I don't mind being so either if it's used as a synonym for European. It's also true not every Spaniard looks like me, some having lighter features. Then again, in its traditional sense the word was never about physical features.

One thing I'm a little sad about is Spain not having contributed as much as other med countries, such as our Italian cousins, to the general advancement of humanity. While they might nowadays be trapped in a corrupted state of mediocrity, they had some moments where they truly shined. I tip my skull to them.
