Anyhow, France has been finished in 1940. Vichy or De Gaulle stuff are irrelevant.

Germany was finished in 1945.

Moreover, Vichy France never formally joined the Axis, so Petáin just wanted to rebuild France and be left out of the war. This was of course made hard to do by de Gaulle and the Free French, who wanted to fight to the death. De Gaulle and Petáin really were just different sides of the same coin, who only differed in the way they saw was the best way to save France. Petáin wasn't either truly a fascist, more like a reactionary who tried to transform France from the rampant degeneracy, decadence and communism back towards traditionalism and nationalism. In my opinion, Petáin should be rehabilitated and be seen as a tragic hero, like Saigo Takamori is in Japan.

He was too weak and politically clueless to even grab what was going on. Neutrality in an occupied country is a farce. De Gaulle at least was clever enough to play the political game 100%.
