Marvel used to be beloved and popular. As was the norm at the time, a majority of their important characters were white and male. These characters became cultural icons. In more recent years, Marvel has been taken over by Marxists. Marxists want to put more "diversity" into their comics.

Problem is Marxists suck at being creative, and coming up with new characters and ideas. So they take existing and liked characters, and give them tits/make them a minority/turn them into a fag. Marvel movies have sold well by being consistently not terrible, at a time when very few movies are good. But at the same time, most Marvel movies aren't very good either. They're just safe. You won't be bored. You won't be offended. There will be funny parts. There will be a little romance. There will be action. The special effects will be competently executed, and look like a comic book brought to life. But odds are, a week later you won't remember any of it. It's not enriching your mind in a lasting way like a really good film can.

Plus they're sold as a set, so a lot of people didn't want to miss any, except it's becoming increasingly obvious that it doesn't matter if you miss them. It isn't all one big cohesive story, they're just putting in some hooks for the next one. People are catching on.

First off, it's depressing. It's like one of the terrible futures they have to avert in a time-travel story. The X-Men have lost, Professor X is senile and shits the bed, Logan is old, sick, dying, broken, and contemplating suicide. All of their friends are dead.

The writing is terrible. Logan working an honest job trying to save up money? But he's still willing to slaughter robbers after he deals with them in an inappropriately fearless way, provoking them to shoot at his near-invulnerable body? This isn't Old Man Logan living a humble life (and doing something involving at least a little hope, like raising a family) because he went pacifist. This is just incompetent writing. Wolverine does dirty work when he needs to, and he's good at it. He'd have had the money he needed for the boat within hours of deciding he needed it. But he's working an honest job and doesn't have the money because plot.

Then there are the villains. The main antagonist, despite having a slightly creepy-looking prosthetic hand, has no powers and leads a gang of thugs who are in no way trained or equipped even to deal with the superpowered children they're trying to capture, let alone adult superheroes. It makes no sense that they have one full-grown Logan clone, and no other super-powered assets, and that shouldn't really pose much of a challenge to a group of superpowered people, even if most of them are children.

It's just bad, unpleasant, and doesn't make sense.

I think it's almost pointless to list the in-universe/dramatic justifications for these new legacy characters when 90% of it is, as you say, editorial. And that's the problem with comics, especially American comics, in that it has become impossible for someone to discuss these stories purely on their own merit because the hand of the overbearing editors is so omnipresent in nearly every dramatic turn of significance. It makes one wonder what kind of writers would ever be attracted to work in that kind of environment.
