People who care about money and not learning (aka neoliberal freemarket beancounters) have overseen the casualization of academic labor, which means a lot of teaching gets done by people who are underqualified and underpaid. In English literature, most curricula are still driven by a principle of historical coverage, which means there's always a medieval option and a Shakespeare option, as well as 19th C. fiction and plenty of options to suit people of all political or aesthetic persuasions.
Roman history now is a small field that not all institutions teach, but that's for separate reasons.

There's no consistency in her punctuation. Some of the books are actually pretty interesting, but it usually does matter which edition you purchase (usually so that in class discussion you can all find the right page and because something like A Room of One's Own will have gone through multiple critical editions with some textual variants. Run away from this class, since the instructor doesn't seem competent. Also, run away from the institution because this level of syllabus quality isn't acceptable. When I was in college during my last semester I took a Women's Crime Lit class (Only needed 2 classes but if I took 4 I got full financial aid)

She wasn't as crazy as yours, but a bit nutty.

My advice, DO THE FUCKING WORK. I read all the books and always came to class prepared and helped spur discussion on the books along (We mostly just discussed the books and then did some kind of assignment in class. We also watched a bunch of movies)

Ended up with an easy as fuck A, and the last class she pulled me aside and thanked me for taking the class seriously and gave me her card in case I ever needed a reference. I used her on as a reference and apparently she had nothing but amazing things to say (She wasn't completely retarded so she built up the fact I took the class seriously even though I was an IT Management major) and I ended up getting hired.

PS: Of the 8 novels we read, 5 of them had a female character get raped, 3 with a weird as fuck object (Two of which were knives). I wish I remembered them all, but I know one was "One For The Money" which had a few pretty brutal scenes in it.
