There were never IQ tests during that time. IQ is a made up arbitrary unit that works by standard deviations from the norm, it was only used in the past for mentally challenged and "gifted" kids. Here's my hypothesis: the same person can score between 105 and 180 depending on a wide variety of factors unrelated to their brain physiology. I've aced two different tests due to figuring out quickly what kind of variations of patterns the test maker seemed to be using. The reason I bring this up is the alarm bell that normie people score near 200 on IQ tests when Feynman and other high performing geniuses scored in the 120s. Same with Terrence Tao -- he is a Genius sure, but do you really think his brain physiology is reflective of a score of 180? Seems more likely that his parents forced him to practice math as a kid when other kids played in the woods, and therefore when he took an IQ test calibrated for age he scored way out in the tails of the distribution.

IQ tests are pointless except for the purposes they were created for in the first place. If you want to know how effective someone's brain is, have a conversation with them or see what they have achieved in life. If you want to know the performance of a brain on a given task, measure the performance on that task.

I'm an academic working at a great university. If that's something you would call high IQ society then I'm a member of one. To be honest IQ is one of the scientific concepts most attacked by the media. Even with the scientific consensus behind it, the media will keep attacking it by promoting anti-IQ books like The Mismeasure of Man and attacking pro-IQ books like The Bell Curve. The promotion of the EQ bullshit is another front of this battle. The "many intelligences" thing also is still there, infecting the minds of the general population.

Sometime ago I used to think that it was all a coordinated attack, but these days I'm more inclined to the idea that the general population is simply not ready for IQ. I took WISC-IV as well and scored 157 on spacial and 145 on verbal. I never looked into what that meant though, and I stayed in the same rut of a public school (same grade and everything).

145+ also doesn't grant creativity or whatever the shit you want to call it. A creative(engaging in the act) genius is far more rare than just exceptionally high-IQ individuals. We'd be into some full-on star wars bullshit by now if creativity was innate to extreme IQ.

Some New Zealanders have run a bunch of studies on gifted kids. It does influence social behavior, indirectly. Just makes it harder to find peers. I think it was a 160 sd score that was equivalent to 200 in the old mental age norms. Meaning a 160 kid will have the intelligence of someone roughly twice his age, making it pretty difficult relating to his peers. Imagine dumping a 14-year old in first grade with a bunch of 7-year olds. Didn't seem to be a factor for the moderately gifted (130 range) probably since people not too far from that aren't exactly rare. But exceptional IQ makes for fucked up people through a combination of the school system and just poor socialization.

Isn't Mensa just some circlejerk? Being in the top 1% isn't that special, seeing as how it's over 3 million Americans alone.

I find it difficult to take anything away from people who say they have "x IQ" because I'm constantly seeing different parameters. For example, I believe Mensa claims 130 is the top 1%, but I've also seen 135 and 138 labeled the top 1%. I've seen people argue what the deviation of the bell curve actually is. I've always been told 100 is average, 105 for whites, 110 for Asians and 115 for Jews, but I've also seen people lower these by a few points. According to iq-research.info, the smartest country has an average of 108, so those previously mentioned numbers obviously don't fit, and if you do the math (you'd have to be autistic, or me) you'd find their studies put the world average at 91, not 100 which very few countries actually meet.

I wish I knew where to find a place that explained all of these discrepancies and which studies are considered to be the most valid. I haven't taken Mensa's test, but iq-research.info scored me at 131.2; I'm sure it's several points lower, though.

I don't remember the figures upwards, but a standard deviation or two is really fucking huge. 85 adult IQ is equivalent to the average 12-year old, 70 an 8-year old.
100 average is from studying European populations. Probably just an old quirk from its conception. World average is below 100, true.
