Joseph Stalin revived the Russian Orthodox Church to intensify patriotic support for the war effort and presented Russia as a defender of Christian civilization, because he saw the church had an ability to arouse the people in a way that the party could not and because he wanted western help.[6] On September 4, 1943, Metropolitans Sergius (Stragorodsky), Alexius (Simansky) and Nicholas (Yarushevich) were officially received by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin who proposed to create the Moscow Patriarchate. The Moscow Theological Academy Seminary, which had been closed since 1918, was re-opened.

Before Barbarossa, Goebbels made a speech about the threats of Bolshevism ot the east, he claimed the stories regarding the rape and murder of clergy members by the reds was so horrific he wouldn't go into detail. He cited this as one of the many reasons why the red menace must be crushed. Stalin was 100% atheist, he was a thug and a murderer employed by jews to carry out the dirty work. He was dangerous even to them, hence why Lenin urged Trotsky to never allow Stalin to come to power. He did, and son after began killing Jews in high positions of power, he served under them, hence why he decided to kill them, he knew how malevolent they where..

Persecutions continued after Stalin took power, he even labelled the orthodox monks as "bloody enemies of the working people."

He send thousands to death in labor camps. Wikipedia states that this oppression only stopped due to the German invasion.
