Rainfall-wise, the worst is over. The rainfall in most of the areas are under half an inch, but there are a few places that are getting these really tiny but really severe rainfalls of over a foot. These bring the whole average up and stress then channels.

The severity of the rainfall is over, it's just a question of whether the infrastructure can handle the rest as the storm moves on and dissipates. Even if it picks up a bunch of moisture from its brief time back in the gulf, it won't compare to the rain we had before, but it can make flood relief take much longer.

Huston flood control can handle 6 inches in 24 hours (.25 a inch a hour), it may be down to 5 inches due to clogging.

So for example, right now a lot of the flooded areas are slowly draining. buffalo bayou will not be lowering due to the dam release.

There will also be inflows from upstream, but even if rain stopped, it would take a week to drain most of it, and some areas like the dam release area will be high for months.

Both of these are flood resevoirs that are designed to catch floodwater coming from upstream and hold it till the city flood control measures are ready to take the water.

Water can take 2-24 hours to hit streams depending on the land use. (asphalt the fastest, woods the slowest) so right now they are taking in water that fell north of Huston.

Thing is, they can't take any more, so they are dumping water into the flooded system as a emergency measure, as they don't want to hit the top of spillway.

They will rise 4 inches a hour or so IIRC.

The gulf waters were 2°F (only about ~1°C) higher than average, so it sucked up a lot more moisture than. Then when it hit land, it had nowhere to go. Even when ops do recover, United will have a shitload of passengers to reaccomodate. It's possible that you might not end up on a flight to your destination for a week or more.
