Which is precisely why it stands out so much as a success. The fact that handpicked ruler provided so much stability should be kept in mind. Hand picking the successor and the contingency plans like the Severans (and Augustus) did, objectively gets rid of most of those risks. If the best guy for the job picks himself the next best guy for the job after careful and lengthy considerations, the probability goes down faster than a splinter goes through Henry II's brain.
