A lot of people do not understand just how disgusting flood water is. It is not like you can just dry things out afterward and have it be all good.. I was affected by the Great Flood of 1993. We lost everything. The water was like black sludge and smelled of absolute death. Dead animals, sewage, oil slicks, and mold was everywhere. There was an inch of "black toxic death sludge" left on our floor, and it saturated and stained everything, the walls, all of the wood in our house. Millions of earthworms came to the surface and died. I can still smell it today.. I don't have enough words to describe how unimaginably disgusting it was, and how impossible it was to clean up. My friends and family had recurring illnesses for a few years afterward..

This was a long time coming. You could trace the failures all the way since allison and rita was the final warning but the reality is Houston blew the money into public transportation and other dumb projects (((cultural))) projects rather than preparing for floods and sheeit. Plus with the masses of people moving in the infrastructure just couldn't keep up.

The national guard has already been deployed (a friend has been watching black hawks take off and land from a highway near his house). None of the things that made Katrina become a tragedy are in place to occur in Houston (that BS at the Superdome, for instance). Yes, many people will have damaged homes, will have lost property, and so on. That is a bad thing, but is to be expected in natural disasters.

However there is a difference between suburbs having ground floors damaged by their nearby creeks and rivers overflowing, and a city's center being flooded for weeks the way it was in Katrina. If you look at most of the USGS gauges, most of them are still below levels during Tropical Storm Allison in 2001. It could still get worse, for sure, but this doesn't somehow magically wipe Houston off the map, or cause any of its major industries to disappear in a puff of smoke. If anything, a bunch of suburbs and small towns are getting screwed the most.
