It won't be as bad as Detroit because it's so close to NYC and DC. People live in Philly and commute to both cities, and so long as the taxes are lower small businesses will move there to be 'close enough' to NYC to service their clients.

The thing that hurt Philly was the low income housing initiative. Someone had the bright idea to pepper these areas every few blocks throughout the city. So even the richest neighborhood has one right next door. And the low income residents and their families get pissed that people have more then them right next door and take everything they possibly can.

You have to bar your windows in philly. Your doors need top and bottom deadbolts. You will find new crowbar marks on them monthly. If you don't have a garage expect your car to be broken into regularly. Leave nothing in it, make sure you're insured, and use the club. At night walk in groups and keep your hands out of your pockets.

When I had a house there we tried to put flowers out front. Had an 100lb concrete flower pot chained to a barred window. Someone bolt cut the chain and stole it in 2 days. The light bulb out of our porch light was stolen weekly. And someone climbed an 8 foot wall with a 4 foot iron spiked fence on top to steal a bike out of the backyard. One day someone smashed my car window to steal a can of bugspray I left in the backseat.

Two reasons. First is because when you have your hands in your pockets people think you have things that they can take. It's the same reason why you don't walk and talk on your phone in philly. People will take you phone right out of your hands and run. Second, and mainly, you leave yourself open to be sucker punched and robbed.

Everything south of Spring Garden is fine. The city is super segregated and that is good. Of course the north and west are shit holes, just look at how much litter there is on street view.

There is a professional white guy on my block in south philly who pulls the dirt out of the gutter and even weeds the crack between the sidewalk and the private parking lot.

The old italian lady i worked for in south philly made me sweep between the street and the curb. You need like 2 people on each block to give a shit and it really makes a difference.
