When you hear those slogans about diversity you imagine in your head someone of a different background. Someone who brings another view of the human experience in the most deep and profound way possible. You expect this person to look different, perhaps speak different, maybe listen to music or find beauty in an art form they value. You expect this person to think as you do, and thus apply their perspective to whatever project they happen to engage in, as you would. Following a rationale, an assumption, that the collective efforts put forth result in a coordinated execution the individual, but more importantly, the monoculture, could never compete with.

This is illusion. These people think nothing like you, and more importantly, they lack the capacity to do so. Assimilation is a farce. There is no replacement for growing up in a culture.

We're all just humans!

Well yes, obviously. But everything still hinges on what you mean when you say "human". Leaving aside the thorny biological issues for a moment let's just focus on culture. That's valuations - what's good, what's bad, what a person should strive to be, what a person should stand against, what it *means* to be a member of a family, a community, a state, a nation. I hope it's trivially obvious that those definitions vary pretty damn wildly across the world. Hell, some people acculturated to essentially the same value system as you can hold such oppositional notions to your own on those definitions that you're fully prepared to shriek, "you're not even an American!" at him.

If we're all just human really means that "deep down we're all just white middle class North American suburbanites" then no, no we're not. When an illiterate Afghani farmer says the word "family" he means a constellation of things - relationships, responsibilities, privileges, punishments, etc many of which you would find deeply, deeply offensive. Plunk him down in the middle of an all-whitebread neighborhood and maybe he acclimatizes. Put a whole community of people there and (a) he doesn't actually have to and (b) he's under immediate pressure from everyone around him to maintain those values - again, many of which are anathema to those of a liberal democracy. Ditto someone who grew up pawing through garbage in Argentina, or who grew up being told that America is the great Satan and that Islam will rule the world.

You have to ignore a heck of a lot of inconvenient facts to imagine that you can balkanize your entire society and maintain any kind of cohesive value system. It's the odd arrogance of the liberal elite that their meta-values will be precious to anyone they grace with their attention. That's not a given at all, and many of them are just going to see you as a useful rube.
