More than 15% of the American population is treated this way per year, not including independent therapy. The institutions of the past were brutal hellholes that abused the human rights of their detainees and often made maximum security prisons for literal criminals look desirable.

It's hard to elaborate, because our society is still not very knowledgeable on the subject of mental health. I think psychology is extremely abstract and many times even harmful, I think drugs mental patients get can be extremely dangerous in many cases, and often times a poor solution. I also think there are many people that you can't really be relaxed with, because all they require to go insane is a trigger.

That I see as a symptom of the modern age. It used to be the case that people got thrown in asylum for the smallest of misdemeanors, yet I'm fairly convinced the number of cases doctors are dealing with nowadays is way larger than back then, and only getting larger. Seems to me the more we "progress" as a society, more groups of people spring up, that have some sort of mental condition going on.

I myself am not immune to that, btw. I used to have mild anxiety disorder. But I didn't require anyone to help me fix it, did it on my own, which is also how I realized that these mental disorder may as well be connected to our age, not genetics or whatever. Because what I realized is that anxiety goes away, once you feel complete, and happy, and useful. Anxiety is a human condition that makes people who are more self-aware... fit in. It gives them two choices - either do what you were born to do, or be anxious.

Obviously severe cases need a specialist to cure, but I'm just saying, the more we stray away from our natural human condition, the more sick our minds become, because they're asking us to reconsider our choices in life, and do what matters, and what we know deep down that we were supposed to do on this planet.

The current system the western world is running is the best one we have come up with so far, I think what we need to do is add beds so the hospitals can handle more patients while opening up long-stay hospitals as alternatives to imprisonment for the legally insane. We for sure need to expand access to everyone and stop rejecting the homeless and the vulnerable who will develop into dangerous cases if left untreated.

We already do to a significant degree. I spent two years working in two different long-term facilities for the chronic mentally ill in Chicago. One was around 190 beds, the other was around 400. Virtually all of the patients were on SSDI, about half had legal guardians. While the facilities were technically "psychiatric rehabilitation facilities" and the mission statements talked about people becoming well enough for independent living, the reality is that most were lifers. Hell, one of the facilities had two floors of NGRI/incompetent patients who were never going to leave. That one was across the street from million dollar lakefront condos.

Our facilities generally weren't for the purely developmentally disabled, those tended to go elsewhere. I was in a nut ward for 3 days when I was 17. Trust me some people belong there, dangerous, nutty, some completely detached from reality. Right now we are locking up crazy people with criminals, which creates a dangerous situation for everyone involved. Most of these nutjobs will be getting welfare benefits when they get out.
