You can see the phenomenon in the most extreme liberals, who champion islam as more peaceful, better for women, the culture that led a golden age during the occupation of some parts of europe etc.. Extreme leftists also wear hijabs "in solidarity" and were yelling "allahu ackbar" at a protest of the Trump election. A few even converted. The societal upheaval of another 9/11 would absolutely provoke many of them to convert to islam -- secularized, socially progressive "islam lite" of course, but still.

Until 2004-2005ish (really starting 2006) at the latest the cultural zeitgeist was pretty strongly jingoistic patriotic and conservative. Dixie chicks getting death threats and ostracized to hell and back for criticizing Bush jr. Granted they belonged to the conservative bastion of country music but in general the far left critical theory sorts only gained root and momentum around 2006 onwards.
