In the south, in states like South Carolina and Mississippi, black slaves outnumbered the whites. The economy was based on cotton.

In the north, everyone was free, and the economy had a large industrial component.

So slave holders in South Carolina rising up in rebellion and then attacking the local army fort, joined by rebels in other states, does not amount to much.

As someone else here said, if the South Carolina Fire Eaters had understood their position, they could have made a lot of money in the 1860s, 1870s, and 1880s. Instead they did something rather foolish and lost it all.
