Look, you're going to pay that money regardless. If restaurants stop tipping then they have to increase waiter pay by quite a large margin just to keep people working there. With tipping you atleast have the option of not paying someone who is giving you shitty service. But if I as a restaurant manager decided to stop accepting tips, then I'd have to increase the prices on all the food or simply start adding a service charge on the bill. At a restaurant, the food prices are not all inclusive.

Basically the whole point is that it doesn't matter if tipping is a thing or not - you're not going to be spending less at a restaurant if tipping stops being a thing. There's a value on all the labor, food costs, management, property, all the regulatory costs and licenses, marketing, etc. And that value is already set, it can't be changed regardless of how much you don't like tipping.

Atleast with tipping you can dock the pay of someone slopping food on your table and being a douchebag.
>>
>>139128324
>how much more do you want?
I don't want anything else, the free drinks served by girls with huge tits is enough to get me coming back to the casinos every 2/3 months since I live an hour away from Atlantic City.

But that clearly isn't enough for the rest of my generation, since 8/10 people at the gaming tables and 9/10 people at the slots are older than 40. Somethings gotta give.

This is not a good point, those workers are paid a set wage they agree too. Servers get $3 an hour plus an uncertain amount of tips. If the tips over the pay period don't equal minimum wage at that time the resraurant has to pay the server minimum.

These are totally different jobs with totally different pay expectations. Stop trying to compare them
>>

>>
>>139128831
This is true, but it's not cut and dry. It's mostly a cash only business so if they get such terrible tips over the course a pay period that they Restaurant has to pay them minimum wage, the entire check gets eaten up by taxes. I was a server and bartender for 7 years, don't try and tell me how it works.
>>

>If the tips over the pay period don't equal minimum wage at that time the resraurant has to pay the server minimum.

Liberal millennials are busy getting fast food and bitching about it.

Conservative millennials are already know or are learning how to cook for themselves.

This is a well-known fact, since liberals are all about bowing to the corporate machine, in order to be more oppressed (everything sucks, I hate myself, I want to die) - while conservatives are more about being self-sufficient (hunting, community, skill sets). It's literally a cuck vs chad meme.
>>
>>139128885
this.

If the restaurant has to raise prices to pay workers, then who gives a fuck? It's supply and demand. Theoretically, you're not going to get the same number of customers if prices are higher; therefore, less workers. It should eventually equal out to what you were making before with tipping services-- theoretically.

Has anyone even done fucking research on this? What tipping says to me is this: "if we can pay you less, we will"
>>

When I do eat out, I go to "cafeteria"-type restaurants where you pay before eating and usually take the food to the table yourself. I save a lot of money and sometimes the food even tastes better. I think the restaurant-in-a-box thing is an attempt to take the fine dining experience where you have a real staff waiting on you, recommending wines, etc. and adapt it to the American middle class. A shift in the culture would see a lot of "cafeteria"-style restaurants opening up.

The prices *aren't* higher, they never change. The value of things is the value of things, this doesn't change no matter how much you don't like it. People will always go to restaurants, they just may not always go to the same kinds of restaurants. That will always change, but the prices of food, equipment, property, labor, alcohol, beverages, none of that changes on a whim. Those are subject to their own market forces and as a business owner I can't just decide to lower my prices because people don't like tipping.

Sure there are restaurants that have gotten fat off bloat simply because they could, but that's not every restaurant. Most of us actually took the time to calculate how much all of this costs and set a price point that makes the business turn a profit. If there's no profit then there's no point in the business. People overwhelmingly, despite all the bitching you see online, prefer service and to be in charge of how much service is getting. When they get good service, they feel good about giving that person more money. When they get bad service, they don't feel like they have to make a big fuss about anything they simply pay that person less money.

I wouldn't be able to turn the kind of profit I'm doing so if this wasn't a thing, so I can't tell if some of you are just angry about tipping, some of you have never owned a business, or some of you never eat out so you think no one else does.
>>
>>139128855

i delivered for papa john's for years. i noticed something about race and ordering (outside of the obvious that niggers never tip):

white people would buy pizza with coupons or other deals. generally, a white person would pay like $10 for a 2-3 topping large pizza. meanwhile, niggers always pay full price and never think to use the specials. they routinely paid $15 for a medium 1-2 topping pizza. so they overpay and don't tip.

Here in Texas I'm acquaintances with a number of restaurant startups that are attempting it. Most of them do high end steakhouses in which they've baked in the same kind of costs into the bill. Generally with high-end steakhouses it's not a big deal to see meals cost $40 or reservations be $100 a head. This allows the restaurant to pay the waiter higher than minimum wage (which you cannot get minimum wage workers into a high end restaurant).

I've heard talk of someone trying to start up a gastropub in which wages were baked in, but it's been failing recently because people are too used to the cost of food at tipping restaurants that they see stuff for +$3-5 and they don't consider it worth the "extra money" even though that'd be the same money being used to tip service.

Personally, I tip most often 18-20%. I've had bad services and left a penny, or wrote zero.

Bartenders are my biggest petpeve, however.
>I need a beer

Do they really need a fucking tip for that? I'd rather walk around with my own 12pack, like I did at high school parties back in the day. I do, however, tip for mix drinks.

The other pet peeve I have is the introduction of the tipping jar. What the fuck? Or when I go to pick up a pizza, there's a tip line on my receipt-- I ALWAYS write "zero". Fucking Christ, man, maybe it's about time the restaurant culture just fucking ends. This is exactly why a new type of food culture is growing.

I just feel there's situations where tipping is getting out of control, and how much you should tip. With a stagnated global economy and wages across the board in every profession, there's only going to be more of this bullshit.

Even in cuck fortress Europe there is no tipping culture. Anywhere I went for food the service was in my mind better than what I would receive back home. I did not have to deal with people being fake to try to leverage as much money out of our table as they could. The prices for the venue were in line with my expectations and I was paying what I would expect for any restaurants of the same level without having to pay a tip.

Imagine my surprise when it also does not exist as a thing at pubs. The first time I got a pint in London I tried tipping the bartender and got looked at like an idiot. Who would have thought people can pour a measure of liquid without needing a tip every time.

The point is restaurants can do fine without it, can stay affordable, and the workers can actually be genuine instead of trying to get those gibsmedats.
>>
>>139130663
Why are you fucking retarded?

Every single person who is a customer for a business pays the people who work there. Employers don't magically make money somewhere else to be able to pay their employees. It literally doesn't matter if the money comes from tips or if I bake it into the costs, *YOU PAY FOR OUR GOODS AND SERVICES*.

I don't disagree with this. My restaurant is sit down full service. And the waiter shares the tip with any busser. My bartenders are paid based on alcohol sales. The more they hustle, the more they make. I don't care if they have a tip jar, no one really uses it anyway. The tip line at fast casual though is stupid, and I garauntee you fast casual restaurants *still* pay less than minimum wage. Those jobs are completely cucked and I will never own or partner with a fast-casual.

Yeah but when you amortize that cost over the large number of trips (especially on cheap cruiselines that charge you for liquor and soft drinks) it gets paid off very quickly. I'm not saying that anybody could start their own cruiseline, just that they are immensely profitable and could definitely reduce prices if they needed to.

Oy Vey indeed. What did they expect really?
Millennials in Italy have basically nothing to their name. They can barely afford a car let alone a house.
The spending patterns of the people I know fall into two categories: the people who live like monks and save as much as they can and the people who spend all of their disposable income on frivolities such as eating out or buying a new car.
The boomereconomy is toast.

Sorry forgot to answer,
Expectations of a good server who earns their tip.
Greets you in a warm and friendly manner, .
Answers any questions you may have about the menu as they should be knowledgable of everything on the menu.
Clearly states any promotions or specials.
Accurately takes order and places it with the kitchen.
Monitors status of meal to make sure it is coming in a timely fashion, all while making sure your drinks are full and you're comfortable.
Runs food to table.
Confirms accuracy of cooked meal.
Periodically checks in to make sure everything you need is there.
When finished clears table and monitors your drinks/desert as you finish up.

This is just an abridged version obviously, they don't just run the meal to the table, they make sure you are comfortable and relaxed and take care of any issues that arise.

There's something to be said about baby boomers getting too old and broke to eat out or living in nursing homes, or just too busy getting dead to enjoy a nice useless meal out.

These chains were only kept alive by the sheer volume of people that were available to be served. That's changing and people are scaling back. So will business. It's easy to blame a millennial just as easy as blaming a president for the misdeeds of congress.

It doesn't matter where it is. The price of food is the price of food. The cost of equipment is the cost of equipment. The cost of property is the cost of property. The cost of all the various distributors of misc stuff is that cost. And the cost of labor is the cost of labor. At a normal sit down restaurant in the states, you are not paying enough through the meal itself to pay a full waitstaff. At the barest of margins, you can pay minimum wage. But people do not work these jobs for minimum wage unless they're 16. For people who aren't stupid kids or college drop out stoners, you need to actually be able to offer them a much higher wage. So you can make two decisions: either you can bake their wages into the food prices and adjust your menu accordingly, or you can discount food prices and allow customers to make up the difference. Most waitstaff I deal with would prefer the latter because generous people generally allow them to make more money than a stable wage would. Also this is work that most people that I have employed would rather not care about overtime on and thus don't really care about a stable set wage they can overtime with. Most of them do it because it's the highest income you can make part time without it being your own business.

So I get happy employees who enjoy what they do and are paid as highly as they possibly can, and customers who feel that they are in control of their night out and use monetary incentive to ensure a happy wonderful night out with a date, old friends, or a family visiting. At the end of the day, I will still make the same profits I would regardless. I'd rather my staff make more money and be happier at work, and I'd rather my customers feel more in control of their experience. I can certainly go no tip, but as I said I've offered it and neither my customers nor my workers want it.
>>
>>139131801
No it's not, not in the US, they get paid $3 an hour. Tipping is part of the meal, that's the custom, it sucks, but that's what it is.

i'm currently eating some home-made green chile chicken soup that i made in a pressure cooker in ~30 minutes. i made about 10 servings worth in that time at the cost of about $3 per large serving using high-quality ingredients. i do this with all my meals. this soup tastes much much better than anything i would get at a restaurant other than a high-end restaurant but then i would pay $15+tip for the same stuff.

anybody who actually goes out to eat is a drooling retard

>Those two categories are, in general, the two categories of spenders. Read "The Millionaire Next Door."

I suppose so. But in this case we have a substantial portion of the population who has become thrifty by default, and another who spends all of their (meager) disposable income to eat overpriced food in a restaurant.
I see the effects in the small town where I live. The only thriving businesses are restaurants. They are opening up everywhere because all the stupid cunts want to eat out. It's their only interest in life I suppose.

If Boomers didn't irreparably fuck the housing market with their unchecked greediness, we wouldn't be having this problem. Secure housing comes before all.

Maybe those idiots shouldn't have more than one house? Maybe they shouldn't have taken a serviceable housing market that the past 6 generations lived through and destroyed it just to make more money?

I don't think they're Low IQ or teenagers. Some may be, but I doubt many of the people responding to me have ever owned and operated a restaurant. I'm sure many have worked at them, some probably even in management. But owning and operating a restaurant really teaches you things that you didn't understand because they're invisible to customers and staff alike. For the first years of business I didn't even get paid, all of the money that got made went straight into my employee's pockets and for maintenance / equipment costs.

It's just an entirely different world that people are not used to, but one that people interact with daily. Some people go to restaurants every day / every other day, so it's hard to imagine these things from the perspective of someone who interacts with it but isn't actually involved on the operation. And I was like that too before I ponied up my savings and worked with a few friends from the industry to make something.

Before the Greatest Generation, most houses were passed down from generation to generation. The Greatest Generation had a reason not to, though, and that was because Boomers cucked for the darkies, and HVAC made living out West bearable. So the Greatest Generation left their homes to their retarded Boomer children and moved out West, or to Florida.

Then the Boomers - to no one's surprise - messed everything up even more. Reverse mortgages, buying up multiple properties, hiking up housing prices by 8% per year (which compounds to being nearly 5x the original housing price in just 21 years), and then crying when they can't sell their overpriced properties. What had been given to them for free was denied to their children.

The dumb assholes got what they deserved.

>the workers can actually be genuine instead of trying to get those gibsmedats.
genuine is now just a positive spin on being an asshole.

You don't want them to to be genuine. They're genuine scumfucks who have to wait tables for a living.

Tipping is essentially a management technique. Running a restaurant is enough work in terms of getting the food, plates, drinks, supplies etc. there and correctly assembled. The managers don't want to spend time monitoring the wait staff. So instead of having a system in place where they need to supervise the wait staff, they simply put the customer directly in charge of a large part of the waitress' income.

Are you trying to suggest that the price of food is determined not by supply and demand but because someone doesn't like the fact that beef costs $X and not $Y? There are market/economic forces that dictate the value of beef. Or in layman's terms, the price of beef is dictated by reals, not feels.

For the prices hotels charge, I'd expect the staff to be paid in gold bricks too heavy for them to carry home every night.

No wonder Air BnB is doing so well. You mean to tell me you pay all the staff in a hotel a third to a hlaf again what you've paid for the room? Where does the money you pay for the room go? Where are the additional costs?
>>
>>139134751
That's true too. I eventually got a staff of people who get paid more than I've ever gotten paid as management. The amount of money they make is ridiculous. And they have tons of customers who ask for them by name and are the sole service for their particular families or groups of friends. This kind of familiar service is the kind that people really enjoy (or atleast people with the kind of money to pay for it and value it very highly).

I should note that I do not operate a restaurant like applebee's if people replying to me thought I was.

Some people feel as if they do. If you don't feel that $20 accurately describes the service they gave you, then you shouldn't feel guilt tripped into tipping that %. But waitstaff at my restaurant are familiar with over 50 beers on tap and more in bottles that aren't macro domestics, they have a huge winelist to know and be able to recommend accurately to customers and describe to them what they'll be buying (to the point that we honor refunds if they're not happy with our waitstaff choices), they're familiar with many aspects of gourmet cooking that becomes an asset to people looking to impress others with a experience of a night instead of just aimlessly wandering a menu and picking chicken tenders. My waitstaff are knowledgeable about a wide range of things, and they are also supposed to be extremely kind and entertaining and take care of everything my guests need. Their bills can be well over $300 and they still end up tipping 20-30% because of this.

True service was a thing we highly valued back in the early 1900's, something we really paid for back then. People still do so today, to the point where my staff can do this part time and make better money than full time managers at other places.

>>139136008
Less people aren't buying it because they just don't like it though, there's a very real reason for the price to go up and for consumer uncertainty to be a thing. In your example there's an actual reason for people to find the value of beef to be off. We're not arguing about that though - there has to be a reason for something's value to change. People buy beef because they want to buy beef. They're willing to pay the cost it takes to provide X amount of beef to the market. It doesn't matter if a couple people don't understand why beef costs that way and throw a tantrum about it, people still continue paying for beef because they want beef.

Unless you can explain to me how throwing an ignorant tantrum about value is a market force then I don't know what else I can bring to you. The vast majority of companies and consumers understand the value of the product and will continue buying it because they want that product. Stupid people who don't understand the cost of that product will not make a dent in that product.
