They were occupied immediately, it was a police state controlled by allies. If you threw up a salute or whatever you'd get beat/jailed/whatever. Plus by that point it was the end of 5 years of war and they lost. There was so much to rebuild.

If you mean what happened to the military brass who escaped the Nuremberg trials, I'm not sure.

my great grandpa fought for mussolini in africa. he said when the germans came it was like they were fucking death robots. the ITs were so ashamed at their lackidaiscal attitutes and lack of discipline.
turns out they had a terrible trainer. but yeah italy in ww2 was ... not good. they did pull off an "impressive" save of mussolini lol

It wasn't Italy's fault in ww2, they were extremely under resourced but still brave as hell. I know that the Italians had no resources what so ever to destroy a tank in Africa, yet that didn't stop them from trying the crazy bastards. Much respect to them. My great grandfather was a Finnish SS volunteer in ww2, good to see there are more "Axis" descendants around, especially on this board.

Italy could have done better. It's quite a disappointment, but Italy also had a massive communist issue holding them back. Mussolini was essentially Trump, and the military was paramilitary at best. Very half-assed.

Many were happy to be integrated into NATO to stop Communism. The rearmament of West Germany and former Wehrmacht in the Heer was a major point of friction between East and West in those days.

Denazification was very thorough all told. Any ardent National Socialists could no longer practice their sick religion within the territory of Germany, so they scattered across the Earth.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to several German units and submarines that are unaccounted for. I am under the impression that the Antarctic base was abandoned or destroyed by Admiral Byrd. I've seen documents alleging several thousand German colonists were sent by U-Boat to New Swabia, but these are legends.

I can say definitively that by the 1950, the Germans only had three flight discs left and by this point repairs were impossible, so they were hidden in the Andes, though I wouldn't be surprised if the DIA or CIA found them decades ago.

haha I actually new a lot of axis grandpas because I grew up in Northern Michigan, which is the biggest (and only) area of USA where Finnish immigrants came. So I grew up with basically all Finns. Apostolic Lutherans. Tall, blonde (translucent) hair. Great families, super nice. They almost all had grandparents who were axis.

Great people, Finns. Salt of the earth.
