Civilization happened when men chose to trade instead of steal- to specialize instead of being jacks-of-all-trades.
"Making" is a waste of time and effort, just do your fucking job
>>
as we move away from crafting jobs, why shouldn't a man still enjoy making things

Enjoy your work, then you don't need the maker movement.

Self-reliance is civilization. Bartering and trading skills is civilization.

There isn't a point in history before the modern era enough shit was shittily made in bulk for you to be able to work and buy everything with money. Exactly zero definitions of civilization use "trade" as the basis.

The movement promotes creativity thru crafting. The movement's goal is not to create jack of all trades workers but to inspire a hobby that may or may not become a job. You are conflating promotion of a skill with promoting a profession.

Creating technology that fits your specific needs is a sign of civilization. Or are you suggesting that a programmer coming up with a macro to automatically do something at work is also a sign of decivilization?

this

This.
It really saddens me to see so many people here not even able to fix a flat bicycle tire.
People don't realise how dangerous it is to be dependent they are on services and technology.
