If the price of Gold shot up and the US held very little in reserves compared to Russia and China then that would give the latter two a huge comparative advantage in terms of monetary worth - they would likely go about backing the Yuan with Gold and using that in trade instead of the Dollar (obviously having huge ramifications for global commerce).

If China moves to back their currency with Gold then it's game over for the US. They would dump their US treasuries and use the Gold-backed Yuan in trade with other countries (plus they have a huge domestic market, they don't even need the US anymore). Then all that dollar liquidity that the US exported to the rest of the world in recent decades would come rushing back and likely cause hyperinflation, ultimately killing the dollar.

It is for these reasons that I believe the US still does hold a fairly substantial amount of Gold reserves (although not as much as China). TPTB know that it is real money, fiat currencies are all doomed to fail eventually.
