People here keep telling me JUST to run a long wire and attach it all with alligator clips, but that hardly ever makes reception better. Should I just a buy some build-it-yourself kit online? Or is there any other tips and tricks?

go to radio shack and buy any wire, I use speaker wire and it works great.

buy a 3.5 mm jack with an opening and jam the wire in there and superglue/hotglue it in. make sure theres a connection. Plug into the radio AUX port or antenna port

Look it up on ARRL. You take several wires, about 4-6ft in length(or more, theoretically in this case more is better). Connect all of the wires together on one end only. Then connect one of the wire's free end to the radio's built in antenna wire. With the remaining wires, run them along each corner of the room, and around the point where the ceiling meets the wall of you have extra. Have them all converge in the center of the room.

Same theory in larger scale if you have an attic at your disposal. You also need to look in to what time of day different sides of the band work best. IIRC, lower and works better in the morning.
