Democracy is one of the worst systems of governance on the Earth. Our system tries to make it palatable.

Secondly, the Electoral College protects the interests of geographic minorities, and ensure two-thirds of the States actually have a chance at the Federal level. If the Electoral College were abolished, all it would serve to do is drive the more-numerous, but lesser-populated States to frantic regionalism and then Secession.
