Meh, I bought an instant lottery last week after several months, and of course I lost.
You don't buy it to win, you buy the experience of scratching it, the suspence and the hope you'll actually win some significant amount of money - even though you know you won't.

We have 'em, just not in grocery stores.

I play a $3 scratch off bingo once every paycheck. Won $500 off of $3. Literally almost doubled my paycheck for $3. I don't understand when people blow $100 or $200 at a time though. I would never waste more than $10 on them a paycheck. They're designed to play off of hope, winning is nice, but that $500 win is such a rarity even amongst the avid players that I know not to spend crazy money on them. Plus I get to play bingo. They're fun, it's $3 I would have spent on food or art, so whatever. Stop trying to impose your self proclaimed massive intellect on life styles you disagree with. If anything, it makes you more of a close-minded idiot than them.

I agree that, mathematically its stupid.
Its a tax on hope.
HOWEVER, there IS a mathematical approach to sample/selection/result thinking,

and,
UNDER that philosophy,
IF
your goal is (win the lottery),
mathematically (purchase any number of tickets)
has an (infinitely) greater chance of (goal condition achieved) than

(Chance of goal achieved) X (zero tickets).

Sure, its a somewhat naive stance, as not spending on the lottery will PROBABLY be better for you,
BUT
(any) chance is vastly better than (no chance).

One school of philosophy suggests, that if you're nearly broke, you take your last few dollars, and bet everything on a 50/50 roulette spin TWICE, and hope for the one-in-four chance of (great outcome), since the 3in4 outcomes are, mathematically ALMOST the same as having the near zero you began with.

Make of that what you will.
Gamblings mostly for suckers.
>>
>>138865536
they have nothing to lose
>>
To understand lotteries you need to understand how humans get addicted to games of chance. The odds that you scratch a ticket and get nothing, against the odds of winning...it's the same reason why people are addicted to social media, it's a roulette of good and bad things which come randomly.

People love betting against odds

>>
>>138874054
Sure, but people who never play the lottery are equally bad at math.

There is a point where the potential prize money is more than adequate to compensate for the immaterial risk of losing a few dollars.

And it's not hard to calculate either. Since the odds of winning and cost of a ticket are honestly exposed up front.

I used to buy tickets all the time, but 1:50.000.000 odds is ridiculous.
Worse, they raised the price for a game by ridiculous values over time. R$ 1,00 a game to R$ 2,00 and then to R$ 3,50, yeah, fuck you.

I've never won anything, not even the minimum prizes to return the money I spent. Stop playing anything at all, even the 1:2.000 chance for the mentioned minimum prize is ridiculous. Meanwhile, polititians enter a winning game for themselves in the system (only games allowed are government's ones) anytime they want.

If you really feel the need to play with your money, do so in games that require skill. You're better off getting rich through crime than by being ripped off.

Even if you are being offered profitable odds on a 300 million to 1 shot - unless you have enough money to front in order to make the chance of winning it significantly high - the best move is still not to play. The odds are so huge that it is more likely that you will die before you ever win it, so you are basically throwing away money, even if the potential winnings technically put the odds in your favour.
>>
>>138875269
>It just fucking happened. The odds of winning powerball are 1 in 300 million, but he jackpot was 700 million.

I hear ya, but you've missed two facts:
>1 - cost for a ticket was $2 not $1, so the $700 million payout was really like 2-to-700M, or 1-to-350M, which is closer to the 1-in-300M odds
>2 - usually big pots will win multiple tickets, so your 2-to-700M win really becomes 2-to-2xxM if it splits 3 ways. So again, there is validity to saying the odds still aren't on the favorable side cost-to-payout.

But hey, I still played. It cost less money than I put on the tip last time I went to dinner.

Im a professional statistician( I am a data scientist). If what you said was true then financial analysts and data scientists who work in the financial sector would invest in the lottery. But they are not dumb like you. Gambling is a tax on people who don't know statistics and probability. You suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect if you really think it makes sense from a mathematical perspective. Because it does not, stop being an idiot.

If what you said was true then people with money would just pour tons of money into the lottery because they would be able to exploit such probabilities when they just can buy tons of tickets.

Those 2 dollars can be invested much wiser elsewhere. Gambling is for idiots and people who don't know math. The only winner in gambling is the house

the point is people will always play the lottery because as one anon pointed out, someone will always win, and if nothing else it's nice to dream it will be you

it costs you very little if you're rational (buying a euromillions ticket every friday is 8 euros per month - thats like two packs of cigarettes its pocket change), and there does exist the (extremely remote) chance that you will win

the only way you are guaranteed to not win is if you don't play

also you don't have to win millions, I once won 140 euros on eurolottery and it was worthwhile since I invested 2 euros

this is how lottery crazes happen when there isn't a winner in a while and the jackpot becomes absurdly high (one time the jackpot was 600 million euros and naturally 10x as many people played) - just like that the odds of someone hitting the right combination of numbers increases 10 times

someone always wins
>>

>you are still losing a cent on every 2 dollars you put down on blackjack

Less than the cost of the free drinks. If you like playing blackjack and you like free drinks, it's an overall win. Plus, in a lot of places, you get to stare at cocktail waitress cleavage.
>>
>>138876858
Criticism #1 I accept. Of course I should have adjusted the odds of winning to the cost of playing.

Criticism number is absolutely irrelevant for the people we're arguing with here. It's their positions nobody can win. How can you legitimately argue many people will win while simultaneously arguing nobody will win?
>>
>>138877844
theres also a balance- the more people paly the lower your payoff, due to multiple possible winners

>>
>>138878559
letsd say 10$ a month, which is 120$ a year, at 7% interest. if you start playing lotto at 20 and your life ends at 80, that would cost you potential 90k$$$. so yeah, for poor people its a stupid expense

I hear ya, and I occasionally play for fun,
but a lot of the thread is legitimately attacking this kind of bullshit:

>"I knew I was always destined for great things. This must be it! I was destined to be the winner of the highest lottery jackpot in existence. I knew right then and there that this jackpot was meant for me. Who else deserved such a victory? I had been through so much rejection, suffering, and injustice in my life, and this was to be my salvation. With my whole body filled with feverish hope, I spent $700 dollars on lottery tickets for this drawing. As I spent this money, I imagined all the amazing sex I would have with a beautiful model girlfriend I would have once I become a man of wealth."
>>
>>138878903
>>138879086
>>138879130

I sell lottery at work. The addicts are a minority and mainly focus on smaller jackpot games with higher odds. Most people just look at the signs, see when the jackpot gets really high, and buy a few tickets on the big game.

Why can't people grasp that for the majority of players the lottery is as much a form of entertainment as it is a chance to win money.

i have family friends who played a large ticket shared with 10-13 people and they won 700k and there is no tax on lottery wins here, that's also just 1 example. We know a few who have won and one guy won more then once. I never play lottery personally but you could very well win. You either play the same numbers over and over or take your chance with the computer
>>
>>138864619

For many poor people, after rent, utilities, cost of car ownership, insurances, food and necessities, they're left with maybe $100 a month to actually spend on luxuries. So $10 a month on lottery tickets and that's 10% of your disposable income just thrown away.
Why not put that money into stocks, gold, Bitcoin, basically ANYTHING where you have at least a decent chance to grow your money? Or just save it up so you can actually afford some presents for your family at Christmas?

And of course it doesn't end with a $2 ticket a week, does it. No, why not get some scratchcards as well while I'm here. And the slot machines, just once a weekend for half an hour to take the edge off. And of course my cigarettes, gotta have those.
And bam suddenly you've wasted $100 a month or easily more on things that a smart person wouldn't have. Go ask any rich person how much lottery they played before they became rich.

Now personally I don't care if poor people want to throw their money away, BUT if you ever got caught buying a lottery ticket they should revoke your food stamps and welfare benefits. You obviously don't need them. Sorry, but I don't want my taxes going to fund your addiction.

No mathematician would ever buy a lottery ticket. If you walked into the Dodd Stadium (Georgia Tech) and placed a penny on the field somewhere. Then ask a friend to put on a blindfold and walk into the stadium with a penny as well. If that friend placed the penny in the exact same location, that would be 15 times more likely to happen than winning a powerball jackpot.

The same with a dice, if you roll a dice on the same number 10 times in a row, that's still 5 times as likely as winning the jackpot.

But you're the one, right? You just know you are. As they all say.

The top tax rate is 42% and our unemployment benefits are almost as high as the minimum wage.

The system favors retards who stay at home and play lotto instead of the guy who's willing to work shitty jobs and save up what little he can to better himself.

You are a spoiled brat arent you?

Welfare is like 1300 tops. Our Minimum wage is 2000 almost.
Good luck trying to live on welfare

I've already articulated why it is PERFECTLY RATIONAL to buy a lottery ticket under certain circumstances earlier in this thread.

It's not my fault you are mathematically illeterate.
>>
>>138864619
Economic reason, nearly infinite utility payoff for infinitesimally small cost. People comparing it in pure dollar terms are another form of idiot.

For the average person, a dollar a day is a trivial cost that would likely not matter much. What they buy is a chance that might dramatically alter their lives versus a guarantee that they'll live the same life they always had a few dollars richer. The utility change is not well-indicated by a dollar model due to the extreme scale. Transforming from a wageslave to a multimillionaire has far more repercussions on a person's life then some more spending money.

Probability doesn't work with the lottery the way you seem to think it does, you're thinking of scratch cards you fucking oaf. How many millions has the goy with the PhD made you, faggot? "B-b-b-b-but we're getting close! Just two more dollars!". Honestly I fucking hate stupid people like you and the, likely non-existent, "expert" you're talking about.

>Probability can be measured
>In lottery draws

Just fucking kill me. I can't live on a planet with such fucking retards. Do you even know what the gambler's fallacy is? If you flipped a coin 10 times and it landed heads up all 10 times, would you immediately lump everything you own on the next flip being tails because "it's due"? Fucking idiot.

>Measuring probability
>Lottery draw

If I was in America I would punch you in your stupid fat fucking face. Dickhead.

> too poor to spend 2 dollars

I only buy $2 dollar powerball tickets, hey maybe i get lucky its 2 bucks. I rarely buy scratch offs, but last time I bought one i actually won 100 bucks desu. But I agree with the other anon said, spending more than $20 on pball tickets is retarded. The guy who won 758m jackpot last night spent 2 bucks.

But of course that's what (((they))) want you to play
>>
>>138864619
I'll buy one $2 lottery ticket a week. It's not expensive and all the money raised by the lottery in my state gets added to the state's education budget as extra funding for upgrading facilities and shit.

Now if you're blowing hundreds of dollars a month on lotto tickets - yeah you're a fucking moron.

Also this.

It is a voluntary tax. Nothing wrong with occasionally getting a scratch off where there is a good chance you can double your money and it is fun. Buying tons of Powerball tickets and constant scratch off are a tax on the mentally deficient
>>
>>138864750
It's a limited loss for a possibly unlimited gain, in statistics it's called positive black swan.
>>
>>138888327
So your argument for saying we have low taxes is "Look at those few countries that have some of the highest taxes in the world"? Internationally speaking we have somewhat high taxes (for individuals, not companies). Heck, all of Eastern Europe has lower taxes as well.

The difference between welfare and minimum wage is only a few hundred euros after taxes. So really, you're working 40 hours a week for a few hundred euros. Many do the math and choose not do.

Also you still haven't explained why anyone's taxes should go to someone's welfare who uses that money to gamble. They obviously don't need it if they can afford to gamble.
>>
>>138882924
>>138883705

You fags still aren't getting it. The lottery is literally the only 'investment' where the risk and potential return are precisely quantifiable.

There is nothing else you can 'invest' money in where the odds of success are so explicitly exposed to you beforehand.
>>
Whenever I ask people who gamble they are like; ITS JUST FOR THE THRILL, I KNOW IM NOT GONNA WIN ANYTHING. But I can't help but thinking it doesn't make sense, if you want thrill there's so much other things you can do. Don't they deep down do it because they think they will win?
>>
>>138889354
It used to be people played more for fun and it was easier to win also, since they didn't switch balls around, so you could calculate a little. Now they have all those lotto magazines how to win, but that's getting pointless. People who play for greed and gamble their houses are just stupid.
>>
>>138888425
Just put that dollar into penny stocks for a more realistic chance to become rich

It's not even a tax. Taxation implies coercion.

>>138864619
Only the autistic fail to grasp the appeal of buying a lotto ticket. Only the autistic believe people buy lottery tickets because "its a good idea". Its fun to buy a scratcher/ticket once in a while for the thrill of what if. Some people like a nice low cost gamble once in a while for the funzies.

Heres how this went down: Someone pointed out how buying lottery tickets wasn't worth it and showed morons buying too many tickets too frequently and mocked them. Then moronic reddit tier humans jumped on the bandwagon and believe lottery tickets as a whole are bad.

Its like atheism. They honestly think it matters at all that the bible is incredibly unlikely to be true. They can't comprehend how religion and faith can positively effect things and maintain a cultures quality (Except for the bastardization that is the muslim faith, its purely a corruption of faith for the benefit of some violent pedophile) .

TL;DR: People buy them for the fun of gambling. Noone is buying these as an investment but autistics certainly can't comprehend that and must sperg out at the thought of someone doing something stupid. Embarrassing really.

Here is the redpill for all the newfags:

Any gambling based entirely on luck is R selected insectoid faggotry. The only red-pilled gambling is K selected skill-based gambling where genetics plays a significant part. Poker is a good example.

>>138890819

>>
>>138891316
>genetics
>outwitting others
I get your point but you clearly don't understand the word you used.
>>
>>138889854
Not to the point for being set for life. The chances are somewhat higher compared to a lotto ticket, but the payoff is more subdued.

Say you buy 10000 of a triple zero stock for a dollar.

It somehow magically goes up a million fold to 100 dollars. You now have a million dollars worth of stock. While it can buy a house, it's not going to cover the rest of your years.
>>
>>138891522

Okay so I mean skill-based gambling. Anything involving manual physical or intellectual skills. The person with the best genetics will generally do the best and be able to win the most.

I'd almost bet some of the best poker players are highly intelligent and way above average intelligence.
