I'm trying to understand taxes.
Taxes are the government taking our property to protect society and to make it function effectively.
But I feel like we should limit government community building taxes because that skips the necessary step of a society forcing itself to become moral and responsible to make its community effective. Ie "there are too many homeless let's help them personally and also give money to homeless shelters" as opposed to the government solution where we put our hands up and say the "government's got it covered."
Thos no gov solution works when communities have money and can help their school systems thrive and prosper but don't give to the poor community next door who is now being left in the dust to break down due to a lack of assistance.
Is the only solution here to tax the richer community to help out the poorer community? Or should the poor community just be left to develop themselves, albeit at a great disadvantage

First, help me understand a currency that isn't backed by anything.

The dollar is supported by its utility as a trade medium. It will always exist, be recignized, and carries the weight of the strongest economy.
It's government won't implode or be invaded. It's government will never raid or steal from it's citizen. America is the #1 tax shelter because of the stability and security of the dollar.

Besides, who wants to wait in line for a grocery store clerk to weigh nuggets if gold and cut you change? Coupons and debit cards already take too long.

He's talking about gold backed money. You tie the value of your currency to the value of a commodity to remove inflation. Not having a commodity backed currency is why milk used to cost 30 cents in the 1960's and a few dollars now.
Doesn't mean people are shaving off gold from their bar they carry around everywhere.

Value is always a mutual agreement. If two people decide a piece of paper is valuable, they can use it to trade with each other. You could do the same thing with sticks or beads. The only reason gold is any better is that it's impossible to counterfeit.
