Slavs closely related to Bulgarians (if not actual Bulgarians), who fell under Serbian borders after the Balkan Wars, and were subject to an intense Serbification, grouped with part of Southern Serbia and a bit of Kosovo and called Vardar. This continued throughout the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, however, when Tito came to power, part of his policy of 'Weak Serbia, Strong Yugoslavia', he ceased the Serbification, but couldn't promote their Bulgarian heritage, as the Soviet satelite Bulgaria may make claims, especially after the Tito-Stalin split. So, instead, Tito dubbed the people 'Macedonians', after all, they did inhabit a sizeable portion of the ancient region. Tito also made claims to Greek Macedonia as part of the 'Macedonian' heritage (he was also upset the communists lost in Greece who he heavily funded). This didn't matter as much as most symbols weren't claimed by the Yugoslav republic, until after they got independence. A downside to their bloodless achievement of freedom, they had no national heros, nor actual history, so they resulted to claiming Ancient Macedonian history, who themselves were a tribe of Proto-Greeks.
imo, call them Slavic Macedonia and get rid of claimed symbols and history, or unification with Bulgaria.
