A wall was never really necessary to stop all the trash leaking from Mexico to the US.

The reason why so many millions of people crossed the border during the Obama administration was because he purposely underfunded the police force that was in charge of border control. (Don't know their specific name) By restoring a proper funding for such forces the border can be controlled fairly well without any need to build a pharaonic wall project that'll cost billions.

It's not that the wall wouldn't improve border security, but with an Obama tier president again the wall would become barely useful since it's no use if there isn't a police force enforcing the borders.

Republicans don't want to stop illegal immigration because they realise how much of the US economy relies on cheap illegal labour and don't want the "good times" to end.
