We are simply the most relevant country in Europe in terms of population and economic power and we can only solidify that position if we use our influence to control Europe. That's why Germany always seeks a leading role in the EU, it benefits "us" economically. Now whether the German people agree with that or actually benefit from such foreign policy is a different story.
