Why is our national rail service shit and how can we make it better? I would love to not have to drive everywhere.

You can't, the distances are too huge. Maintaining modern rail networks across Europe is expensive but arguably worth it because it is so crowded, the US not so much.
Luxembourgish Braille is the braille alphabet of the Luxembourgish language. It is very close to French Braille, but uses eight-dot cells, with the extra pair of dots at the bottom of each cell to indicate capitalization and accent marks. It is the only eight-dot alphabet listed in Unesco (2013). Children start off with the older six-dot script (Unesco 1990), then switch to eight-dot cells when they start primary school and learn the numbers.[1]
Your railroads were built by chinks.

public transportation will never work in a country with so much niggers. public transportation requires a certain level of public morals, which niggers will always lack. so america will have to stick with private transportation.

basically
you could do some massive trillion dollar program where cars are made available to everyone at any time for their personal use and the niggers would destroy it

Why the fuck would you want to use public transport like some sort of yuropoor? Self-driving cars are already becoming a thing, so your problem solves itself.
Alternatively, fly.

We have a massive freight rail network now.
Basically beacuase america is huge all the cities are so spread out, and the small towns have tiny populations. it's not worth connecting small towns to the rail network and the cities are far enough apart that taking a plane is usually cheaper.
The problem is that in the vast majority of the country Amtrak uses railroad tracks owned by freight companies - 72% of the total mileage of tracks used, and 97% of the total tracks traveled. These freight companies have no obligation to give Amtrak trains priority over their own freight trains, and never do (there used to be a law stating they had to, but the Supreme Court struck it down many years ago). The only stretch of track Amtrak actually owns is the Northeast Corridor, where trains are on time >80% of the time. Everywhere else it's more like 30-35% of the time, and delays of 8+ hours are not uncommon, most of which are spent at a light while the train weights for a freight train that was given priority to pass.

This, freight railroads are big moneymakers over here they and LOATH government subsidized passenger service.
There are many in the government who are trying to change this. PTC is a "soft" takeover, they prefer the "Euro" model of trains used primarily for passenger service.

Amtrak used to have little deal with some of the the Class 1 railroads, if they could guarantee a certain on time percentage for the one I work for, Amtrak would buy them 1 million+ ties per year.
