Right now all the research is in AI drones that fight each other. That episode of Star Trek where they see the ruined planet with the drones still at war is likely the future. The 'Center for Humanity' at Oxford even signed a group letter to protest the development of drone/AI weapons but alas.

I'd like to think the future of war is gene-altered superhumans fighting each other to death for our amusement, much like older time in the gladiator arenas. Only this time, on rare occasions prisoners will fight the superhumans in order to gain their "freedom". Not fair, but it's not suppose to be.

The superhumans probably will be sponsored by corporations, nations and the average Joe. There will also be betting, whether underground or official, who knoweth.

People want blood and gore, so maybe clone wars will be fun also. Why not?
