Leg presses alone will fuck up your back even more by causing muscular imbalances, such as overdeveloping your quads while leaving your hamstrings, glutes, etc undeveloped.

If you have a bad back, there are still compound exercises you can try that are safer. For example, I snapped up my back real bad a few years back. Couldn't squat at all for a while, but I was still able to front squat, and so I did that. Got up to IIRC 5x355 lbs front squat before I deemed myself healed enough to go back to regular squats.

but I benched 150 middle school, by my senior year I was maxing out at 320. I was a defensive end from 7th grade to college, naturally a big guy. I don't play sports anymore but I can still bench 285.

If you're big and you lift you can likely get very strong, power lifters and olympic lifters for example. I thought you meant like just fat people in general. I had higher expectations with these untrained bigger guys thinking they'd be stronger as I've heard a lot of people say that being big makes you generally stronger, but was surprised to see that it wasn't really the case.

I will say deadlifting was different; though untrained they were pretty good at that.
