I have to say, the American military may be leaving its zenith. Far more money has been pumped into versus the actual return on development, unless it has some seriously game-changing secret tech. Projects for designing new hardware have become increasingly expensive and all too often have turned up nothing, or look promising but the military opts out of picking it up.

Take the F-35, over-budget, hugely delayed, and very questionable as to how effective it will be in its role versus a competent military, not to mention not THAT many will be built given the hefty cost per unit. A fair comparison is the T-14 and its derivatives which will almost certainly never make up the bulk of the Russian tank fleet even decades from now -but that's due to the major budget cuts in military spending ever since the Cold War. While I'm sure the US has cut back, it's still spending a huge amount on various projects, R&D I guess and they haven't even picked up the ETC gun which is much more effective than the current 120mm.

The MARAUDER project was apparently promising but all information on it dried up after the early 90's and no-one even seems to know what happened to it.

Ships have watches at all times. There are windows to allow sight for those plotting their course. Assuming their propulsion systems were working, they could have either turned or done emergency procedures to reverse. Something is fishy. If the communications systems were down, it could greatly delay an order from the bridge leading to a wreck, but that would still allow for turning.
