You're living in a block with 11 other men, at least. You're in the same space as them, in a cold and wet part of the UK, for months on end. You're spending all day outdoors, doing hard exercise and getting absolutely covered in mud and sweat and blood. They take rather wide turns, maybe small given their size. But its still a big boat.

They also take awhile to get up to speed, even though they can get going quite fast for their size.

The time scale for boats is just different than what people are used to. "why didn't they just avoid it?" well...sometimes you can't, even if both ships see it happening.
