So, as EVERYONE has already done and proven, you can look at the sun for a second or too and you'll be fine. The thing is during an eclipse the sun emits just as much radiation, plus the darker light levels mean your pupils will open up more, letting more in. Do they stop/reduce UV radiation? There are two things that do damage to your eyes when you look at the sun, UV radiation which sunburns your retina the same way it does your skin and the visible light radiation that just imparts a ton of heat energy on the cells, cooking them. During an eclipse the visible light is reduced, but the UV basically isn't, but if the sunshade reduced the UV, yeah he could probably get away with it with only minor damage. I personally wouldn't risk it. I plan on putting on UV blocking sunglasses, getting a quick glimpse and going back inside. I'm north enough it's only going to be like 66% covered anyways, so I assume it will still be pretty bright.
