Top-tier guided missile destroyer of the 7th Fleet unable to detect 600 foot oil tanker before getting rammed by it.

All this winning. American navel power has the rest of the world shaking with terror.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_John_S._McCain_%28DDG-56%29

> USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She is part of the Seventh Fleet, and she has her homeport at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan. She is part of Destroyer Squadron 15.

Second time in about 7 weeks that warships specifically fitted with the state-of-the-art sensors get rekt by commercial ships. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer should know the location and travel vectors of just about every fish with 10 nautical miles.

What. The. Fuck.

I dont know why the media is hyping this up. Ship accidents happen all the time, always have. We had at least 4 a year in the 7th back in 12-16. No idea why it's big media hype now.

>>
>>138455991
>>138456151

What's got me sitting here with my mouth hanging open in disbelief is not that there was "some accident" with navy ships at sea. It is specifically that both these ships (the McCain and the Fitzgerald) are fitted with several billion dollars worth of the most advanced detection gear ever invented in the history of humanity. Literally, NOTHING is better on any ship anywhere, period.

It shouldn't be possible for a warship of this class to be within a mile of another ship and not be on full proximity alert. These are fucking warships that have one mission: be fucking aware of EVERY FUCKING THING out to the horizon and 30 miles beyond. That is their function, the entire rest of the fleet depends upon these ships, and their crews, being able top perform that function every single second of every minute of every day.

Look at the pictures: the McCain was broadsided in a perfect "T" collision.

Just.

(you) are a lying sack of shit. Neither of the commercial ships involved can change course in under about a mile. They are huge, heavily loaded and just plain don't have the engine power for it. They might as well be gigantic trains on rails with no way to make any significant course alterations.

An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, on the other hand, has the engine power and other maneuverability to turn and stop and reverse course with very little notice.

The captain and crew were literally asleep at the wheel for this to happen.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS CORAL SEA*, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!

CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

> President Donald Trump’s initial reaction to the crash of the USS John McCain with a merchant ship east of Singapore that left five sailors injured and ten missing was: “That’s too bad.”

> Trump responded to the crash when reporters shouted questions at him late Sunday when he arrived on the South Lawn of the White House on the presidential helicopter Marine One. The president has returned to Washington D.C. after a 17-day vacation spent mostly at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.

> Steve Herman, White House bureau chief for the Voice of America, asked Trump about the crash at 8:34 pm. The Navy didn’t announce that 10 members of the guided-missile destroyer’s crew were missing until half an hour later.

Second time this happens in couple of months with tankers of all things?
I'm not buying it. I refuse to believe that US navy is this incompetent and can't detect slow moving high-rise building sized chunks of metal, with the worlds most advanced sensor equipment.
Even if a tanker chased the warship on purpose, it wouldn't be able to get even close due to maneuverability
There's something else going on there in those waters and this is a cover story.
Maybe the Chinks are jamming the crap out of the US boats and then ram tankers to them, to see if their tech works well enough to really disable a ship.
I think something like the cyber warfare angle is far more likely than sheer incompetence.
Incompetence would imply that a good chunk of naval command is composed of people, who think it's a good idea to play chicken with tankers and I don't buy that for one moment.
Especially after this already happened once.

> The US navy has suffered four mishaps in the Pacific since the beginning of this year.

> On May 9, the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain was struck by a small fishing boat off the Korean Peninsula.

> In late January, the guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam ran aground while trying to anchor in Tokyo Bay.

> USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine-flagged cargo ship off the Japanese coast in June, resulting in the deaths of seven US sailors.

> All three US warships and USS McCain are equipped with the Aegis missile defence system.

let me educate some because I work on ships. oil tankers even though they are huge can actually move pretty quick, some upwards of 30 knots. which is close to 35 mph. Then are very slow when it comes to course changing. But someone should have seen that fucking thing coming, at night no matter how dark it is you can see the running lights on a ship from a long ways away. Not to mention almost all ships have a AIS that shows up on a ships navigational computers giving you the other vessels location, speed and current course. How they got ran right into is beyond me. Gross negligence is what this is. 100% the Navys officer on watches fault
>>
>>138465760
>They must have detected each other tens of kilometers away.

That's exactly the batshit insane thing going on here. You can give the tanker a bit of a pass, it's 30,000 tons of momentum and just a generic commercial transport with skeleton crew and outdated equipment.

I mean, the tanker _should_ have been able to detect, but it can reasonably be seen how they might not have detected a U.S. Navy destroyer equipped with stealth technology.

But, the McCain not detecting and avoiding from 10 miles away is beyond imagination. Especially after the Fitzgerald incident a few weeks ago. There is no reasonable excuse. This one is a massive fuckup to make make clusterfucks look like a perfect parade formation.

I guess, "That's too bad." #SAD

man... I know one thing about the army and they never give away info when shit hits the fan, I had a friend that served he told me that one day they got to close to a boarder and they got into a fire fight. he was never allowed to tell anyone. so I am thinking we are not being told the truth.. that first ship that was struck by that tanker why did it not stop a turn tell way after the incident? because it didn't hit it. it received a distress call after the incident and turned around to help. second one in the same area a few weeks apart? something is fishy. that red paint you see is the undercoat of the ship. I think North Korea is doing it or China. could very well be a ramming sub. look at the middle of the hole, look at the ship it looks like it was lifted from an impact. something is up. they navy does not want to tell you that Korea is doing some damage to the untouchable war ships of America. They are striking before usa can hit them.
>>
>>138467072
I have hearsay from someone who works at the local port authority. Apparently the Navy ship had its AIS off, so the authority couldn't give directions to them.

I think you'll like this gCaptain article, that talks about the USS Fitzgerald:
http://archive.is/xUaNC
>>
>>138467563
As tinfoil as this sounds I think you might be onto something. The damage doesn't really make sense when you look at the average shape of a container ship. You would imagine that most of the damage would be to the top instead of sea level.
>>
>>138467649
most navy ships turn AIS off so they can't be tracked online by foreign governments.

Without AIS, the ship cannot be contacted by name, and US Navy is instructed to ignore hails with the ship registry number, as it could be an enemy.

The problem is training of US navy communications officers, and them not informing the officer on deck when they get a hail from a nearby ship that IS on AIS and is nearby, or when they detect a nearby ship on an intercept course and do nothing about it.
>>
>>138460261
>This is an entirely new technique. Classic hardening is useless against it.
Explain how. Because that's not how it works.
>>
>>138467649

Arleigh Burke destroyers have a crew of about 300, plus a couple billion dollars worth of equipment that makes them their own port authority as far as complete situational awareness of every boat larger than a typical motorcycle within 50 miles ... including anything underwater.

If they had their AIS switched off -- as criminal as that action is --- it really makes no excuse for the McCain to pass within 500 meters of any ship for any reason. It's a fucking WAR ship ... the U.S. unlocks and targets weapons systems on ships that approach within a kilometer and don't respond to hails and messages to back off. Ever since the USS Cole incident, it's been policy that NOTHING is allowed to approach a U.S. navel vessel.

Whatever happened here, the (on duty) crew of the McCain is in extreme dereliction of duty. That ship is designed to run as an independent unit, with no need to be in contact with anybody, to take care of itself without support in combat situations.

Reason this happens, and happens often, is because the US navy doesn't properly follow COLREGS (International Regulation for prevention of collisions at sea, Rules of the road for maritime vessels basically). These rules apply to all vessels, at all times, and they are fairly straight forward. They set out which vessel should give way, and which vessel has right of way, and what action should be taken by each vessel to prevent a collision.
Speak to any deep sea merchant seamen and they will tell you stories about the US navy not properly following COLREGS. They are notorious for it, and it's reason why other ships are persistently crashing into them. Most of the stories you'll hear are to the effect that the US Navy vessel is the give-way vessel, but refuse to acknowledge it, and expect the vessel which has right of way to change course.

>complete situational awareness of every boat larger than a typical motorcycle within 50 miles ... including anything underwater

Before the USS Cole incident I was sailing with my dad in Vancouver and there was a US Aircraft carrier in the harbor along with it's escort. We circled both boats and were within 100 meters of each. My dad was actually expecting to be warned off as he approached but they were allowing other small recreational boats to come close. We waved to the crew and they all waved back. 9 year old me was thrilled.

Because this was British Colombia there were a lot of angry protesters that the carrier was in Canadian water. The dirty hippies were in protest boats and the coastguard kept them at bay.

My dad at the time explained exactly what you said: They were tracking us and every other vessel in the area. There was very little above, below or on the surface that they were not aware of. The US Navy seemed invincible that day.

if you don't recall, they made heroes out of one of the officers who tried to save some sailors. how a dozen or so people wound up in tiny cabin and couldn't escape but one man could and decided not to. a little confusing.

they have a crew about 500, probably.
and usually about 20 loud-mouths on the bridge at anyone time. which is part of the problem. too many cooks spoil the broth.
you'r average cargo/oil/LNG vessel will have a crew of 10-20. Only 1 or 2 guys on the bridge.
Yet we manage not to constantly crash into things.
>>
>>138473080
>they have a crew about 500, probably.
An alreigh-burke needs a crew of 276, seriously doubt there were more than 170 crew man on-board especially with all the navy cutbacks.
>>

>>
>>138473298
either way, i can guarantee you undermanning wasn't an issue.
Naval vessels always have a ridiculous amount of people on the bridge. It only introduces more opportunity for human error.
All you really need is one competent officer, an attentive helmsman, and maybe a couple of look-outs if visibility is bad.

Also very true.
There's a lot of retards in the navy. I've worked with literal autists who only managed to get their positions because they're savants that have a photographic memory when it comes to exams. Plus, leadership is sometimes so rigid in their rules that it would take a day just to relay simple orders up and down. And paperwork would take a minimum week to get processed because they'd find a misspelling or something stupid that requires the whole thing to be retouted

Hitler was sent two free tickets as a gift but he didnt attend it. they said why, he replied in a letter that he is married to germany , so the second ticket was taken back and legoland became free for all germany instead.

>Its actually not designed to detect close range targets. As any military ship.
so the tanker teleported into the smaller circle around the ship that isn't watched by the sophisticated tools because it's too close, or did all seamen forgot about it as it came inside detection radius? there probably was this one guy having hysterics on the deck but nobody knew why was he posted there in the first place; it's just how we do things, right?
also: this would not have happened to a XIXth century warship. fuck, this would not have happened to a Viking longship or a pirate trireme from the minus fifth century in the Aegean. and it probably did not happen to this ship either; they probably sailed intentionally in harm's way to show off to themselves that yes, they can. well, they found out that the tanker cannot. I mean it cannot stop or change course at that scale.

Women get pregnert, take light duty billet, then go on paid leave. No one replaces them while they are gone so others have to pick up the slack.
Supply is full of Filipinos who can't get clearances. Some are actually smart which makes them resentful. Mess deck is full of blacks with attitudes and chips on their shoulders. Half the women are entitled dykes. The other half are or will be pregneart.

The key to fixing the military is to start awarding people positions based on their skills and qualifications. And stop rewarding people for being a certain color or gender.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

It's possible no one was on deck or looking outside and everyone was just checking their instruments every now and then (except they weren't)

still suspicious as fuck, you'd think some of the instruments or sensors would ping or alarm someone that a big fucking boat is kind of close
