I'm not buying it. I refuse to believe that US navy is this incompetent and can't detect slow moving high-rise building sized chunks of metal, with the worlds most advanced sensor equipment.
Even if a tanker chased the warship on purpose, it wouldn't be able to get even close due to maneuverability
There's something else going on there in those waters and this is a cover story.
Maybe the Chinks are jamming the crap out of the US boats and then ram tankers to them, to see if their tech works well enough to really disable a ship.
I think something like the cyber warfare angle is far more likely than sheer incompetence.
Incompetence would imply that a good chunk of naval command is composed of people, who think it's a good idea to play chicken with tankers and I don't buy that for one moment.

let me educate some because I work on ships. oil tankers even though they are huge can actually move pretty quick, some upwards of 30 knots. which is close to 35 mph. Then are very slow when it comes to course changing. But someone should have seen that fucking thing coming, at night no matter how dark it is you can see the running lights on a ship from a long ways away. Not to mention almost all ships have a AIS that shows up on a ships navigational computers giving you the other vessels location, speed and current course. How they got ran right into is beyond me. Gross negligence is what this is. 100% the Navys officer on watches fault

That's exactly the batshit insane thing going on here. You can give the tanker a bit of a pass, it's 30,000 tons of momentum and just a generic commercial transport with skeleton crew and outdated equipment.

I mean, the tanker _should_ have been able to detect, but it can reasonably be seen how they might not have detected a U.S. Navy destroyer equipped with stealth technology.

Arleigh Burke destroyers have a crew of about 300, plus a couple billion dollars worth of equipment that makes them their own port authority as far as complete situational awareness of every boat larger than a typical motorcycle within 50 miles ... including anything underwater.

If they had their AIS switched off -- as criminal as that action is --- it really makes no excuse for the McCain to pass within 500 meters of any ship for any reason. It's a fucking WAR ship ... the U.S. unlocks and targets weapons systems on ships that approach within a kilometer and don't respond to hails and messages to back off. Ever since the USS Cole incident, it's been policy that NOTHING is allowed to approach a U.S. navel vessel.

Whatever happened here, the (on duty) crew of the McCain is in extreme dereliction of duty. That ship is designed to run as an independent unit, with no need to be in contact with anybody, to take care of itself without support in combat situations.

Reason this happens, and happens often, is because the US navy doesn't properly follow COLREGS (International Regulation for prevention of collisions at sea, Rules of the road for maritime vessels basically). These rules apply to all vessels, at all times, and they are fairly straight forward. They set out which vessel should give way, and which vessel has right of way, and what action should be taken by each vessel to prevent a collision.
Speak to any deep sea merchant seamen and they will tell you stories about the US navy not properly following COLREGS. They are notorious for it, and it's reason why other ships are persistently crashing into them. Most of the stories you'll hear are to the effect that the US Navy vessel is the give-way vessel, but refuse to acknowledge it, and expect the vessel which has right of way to change course.

Before the USS Cole incident I was sailing with my dad in Vancouver and there was a US Aircraft carrier in the harbor along with it's escort. We circled both boats and were within 100 meters of each. My dad was actually expecting to be warned off as he approached but they were allowing other small recreational boats to come close. We waved to the crew and they all waved back. 9 year old me was thrilled.


Because this was British Colombia there were a lot of angry protesters that the carrier was in Canadian water. The dirty hippies were in protest boats and the coastguard kept them at bay.

My dad at the time explained exactly what you said: They were tracking us and every other vessel in the area. There was very little above, below or on the surface that they were not aware of. The US Navy seemed invincible that day.
