Mayor Kim Le Cerf said if Australians were better EDUCATED they would “feel ashamed to be celebrating on January 26”.
DAREBIN council has defied the Federal Government and dumped its citizenship ceremony from Australia Day, a week after a similar decision saw Yarra Council stripped of citizenship powers. Councillors tonight voted to replace the ceremony with a “culturally appropriate event” that would be respectful to indigenous Australians.
The council will drop all references to Australia Day, including renaming its Australia Day Awards the “Darebin Community Awards”.
Mayor Kim Le Cerf said if Australians were better educated they would “feel ashamed to be celebrating on January 26”. “It cannot truly be a national day when the oldest part of our nation cannot own it equally with the rest of us,” she said.
