At least that would mean that there's a party right of the CDU that conservatives can vote for, and that moving to the left finally has a cost attached to it again. Main problem right now is that the AfD is not fully established, so a lot of people don't see them as reasonable alternative - thus leaving the CDU as only right wing party in their mind.

Happened when the CDU realized that there was no party on the right side of them. After they they started steadily moving left because they knew that conservative voters had nowhere else to go anyway and would just have to deal with it.
That grabbed a shitload of voters from the SPD, so nowadays there is no real way around the CDU anymore.

Will probably normalize with the AfD in the parliament, the only question is if the BRD manages to avoid collapse till the situation fixed itself and if the damage will still be reversible by then. It would be fairly hard to rig in an organized fashion since random citizens count the vote. Way too many people would be involved in it to keep it a secret.
We still have people taking it into their own hands to intentionally miscount votes, but those are acting on their own.

It's also simply not necessary if you have the whole legacy media under your control and intentionally keep people dumb. Humans are herd animals, they'll mostly go along with the social consensus.
