Islam was (somewhat) secularised, for a time. Just look at Middle-eastern countries throughout earlier decades. Then some conflict happened that left a void to be filled by fundamentalists. But even then, no matter have much you think you've secularised the youth of a particular demographic, the majority will still side with their family/people/group. I've known many, MANY, "secular" Muslims, who, at the drop of a hat, side with their people when adversity arises; even if it means turning against their friends gained through secularising. Ingroups are first and foremost with everyone.
