I think you're severely underestimating the cultural divide that exists between urban and rural areas. I live in Oklahoma, the only state in the union where Donald Trump won the women vote. We're as republican as they come. But if a civil war happened our state would be completely torn apart.

The developed and college regions like Tulsa and Norman would be solidly democratic. Tulsa has had extremely democratic mayors like Kathy Taylor and honorary democrats like Bill Lafortune. Our republican mayors like Dewey Bartlett and Jim Inhofe have been fucking retards. The farming and oil regions like Bartlesville and Stillwater are full blown right wing retard.

A civil war would bring this state to it's knees in a week. If the state government tried to side with Trump the capitol building would go up in flames. We have way too many blacks and liberals to be of any assistance to either side.

I'm pretty sure the same goes for every state. There would be no civil war. It would just be a whole bunch of neighbors killing each other led by antagonistic militias.

This is pretty much it. It's much different than during the last Civil War, now that we have the Internet. People are connected to likeminded people across the country, so you don't have to be living physically next to the people who you're in agreeance with to be able to form up. If a Civil War actually ends up happening, its going to be a bunch of states tearing themselves apart, some states staying relatively stable compared to the other, with just infighting within communities. That is true, Cascadia would be hard to secure/defend due to I5. Their best bet would be to declare and stay neutral and hope they weren't worth the effort.

Cascades would be a nightmare to cross for any military if the passes were secured and wouldn't be worth the effort. The interesting Oregon fighting would likely take place in the Gorge as control of the dams and the Columbia in general would be crucial and it is an easily accessed corridor.

Here's how it really goes down.

Entire states will not join a cause against the US government. Here is how a civil war is likely to happen:

-Someone shows up to one of these protests and shoots a bunch of people. Honestly not sure if it will be nazis or antifa that do it first, but someone will gun down a shitload of people in a crowd before the police put him down.

-Other groups will see this as a signal of the start. The feds will be slow to react to the threat and treat it as a one off-mass shooting like we've seen in schools, etc. before, but this one is different because of the growing ideological splits.

-One group takes this signal and attacks the extremely vulnerable US power grid somewhere. Electricity is knocked out for a major area like a city or something. People in that city riot and start burning shit, killing whitey, killing each other, killing the 1%, stuff like that.

-Complete loss of rule of law in major metropolitan areas. Cops return home to protect their families as the riots spread into the suburbs in a hunt for "those responsible" (regular white people, anyone not far left)

-Right wing whites begin openly shooting at/combating rioters from the cities. Fires burn out of control as emergency responders cannot rally. Electricity is out so news and radio information spreads slowly, the chaos breeds confusion and outright combat begins.

-Government works to restore power, brings in the national guard or other ground forces in an attempt to stop the violence and panic. Protesters are defiant even vs. military presence. Military ordered to fire on protesters to defend themselves. Military will not do it. Groups involved realize that the government is powerless to stop this. Chaos spreads and sides are chosen, even by the radical center. The map would look very similar to campaign maps because it will be urban vs. rural. The only question is how quickly can it die down? Will it be a very short lawless few months before the government regains control?

There would be no long standing war. The central government would do everything in its power to maintain status quo, meaning the military goes with it, and they would happily use their new toys to squash both extremist sides. The majority of the public, being averse to violence and instability, would looks towards said central government to maintain order, casting out any far left/far right insurgents for the sake of the safety of the majority.

Anything more than that is just cringy as fuck larping. Our country is too reliant on the government for it to allow a large scale civil war.

I think any left-wing uprising in the US will play exactly like the failed Iraqi revolt in 1991: in the initial confusion the rebels will seize the cities and the surrounding areas, but the government will stay in control of the countryside and its core area of support.
