NASA Unveils Plan To Stop Yellowstone "Supervolcano" Eruption, There's Just One Catch

So, NASA came up with an alternative plan. They believe the most viable solution could be to drill up to 10km down into the super volcano and pump down water at high pressure. The circulating water would return at a temperature of around 350C (662F), thus slowly day by day extracting heat from the volcano. And while such a project would come at an estimated cost of around $3.46 billion, it comes with an enticing catch which could convince politicians (taxpayers) to make the investment.

So... they're planning to pump water into a volcano, where it will turn into steam. This doesn't sound dangerous at all.
>>

they can get geothermal power from it, so basically gets the grid some cheap electricity (less costs for the consumer). i dont see whats wrong with it.

>>
>>138382971
You know, I always wondered why geothermal hasn't been a viable solution... You drill a hole, you pump water down into it, and then steam comes up. Energy loss from pumping the water, and maybe the steam isn't high pressure enough to spin a turbine?
>>

>>
>>138384109
literally no water vapor being created because the water is used as a heat-conductive and is always pressurized so it wont vaporize and then they let it cool off
>>

you can contrap the water vapor in a geothermal generator and cool it off....
>>
the Space Shuttle was the most clusterfucked engineering project in history. they will clusterfuck yellowstone if you let them near it
>>
>>138384399
according to the article yellowstone has the potential to release 6GW of power

>“Yellowstone currently leaks around 6GW in heat,” Wilcox says. “Through drilling in this way, it could be used to create a geothermal plant, which generates electric power at extremely competitive prices of around $0.10/kWh. You would have to give the geothermal companies incentives to drill somewhat deeper and use hotter water than they usually would, but you would pay back your initial investment, and get electricity which can power the surrounding area for a period of potentially tens of thousands of years. And the long-term benefit is that you prevent a future supervolcano eruption which would devastate humanity.”

yellowstone is done in 300 years why are they causing mass-panic

My personal theory is that we live on a dying planet because the Earth's core can't keep spinning forever. Sooner or later, we'll lose the magnetic field and we'll have about 1,000 years from that point to get off the planet or become extinct.

>There's no way they could extract enough heat to make any meaningful decrease in the risk of an eruption.
Precisely because it's fucking massive the overall heat doesn't change that quickly until the volcano reaches a critical point and eruption becomes inevitable. Volcanos operate on geologic time, which means they get hotter slow as shit. Which means you can make them get cooler slow as shit and you'll achieve homeostasis and be fine.

You don't need to instantly freeze the volcano. You just need to keep it from going critical.

That said if it's already going critical, we're absolutely fucked. I think our only option at that point would be attempt to trigger a smaller eruption to relieve pressure so we don't completely fuck the planet and I'm not sure we have the tech for that yet. We totally have the tech for a 10 km hole straight into lava though. Russians made a 12 km one once just fucking around.

Unless we've found a planet with a magnetosphere, there's no sense in getting off the planet. Space would be just as radioactive and devoid of atmosphere as the surface. It'd be far faster to just try and contain as much of the atmosphere as we can in shielded structures than to do that AND try and launch those structures into space.

>People not reading that the plan is a closed loop geothermal plant to leech heat energy out of the volcanoe, not pouring water down a hole.
A closed loop geothermal plant is literally just pouring hot water down a hole, letting it come up another hole, and passing that shit through a turbine.
>>
Bullshit, all you have to do is send 40 guys down there to kill Ragnaros.
>>
>>138383046
They could make it pop early.
>>
>>138391697
Yes, it is not pouring water into the closed system it is running a heated loop right next to it. Pouring water into the caldera would generate pressure, while using a heat loop would reduce it.

>4 billion dollars is such a huge chunk of our 3.8 trillion dollar budget
4 billion is nothing. It's worth it at that cost, it would still be worth it if it was 400 billion. Yellowstone won't just affect the liberals in that area, it'll affect over half the country and devastate the world economy. Actually, we could probably use how bad it would affect the world economy as a way to get funding from other nations.

Vertical piping is still a fucking hole in the ground. It's just one with artificial walls.

>>
>>138383362
If there is an eruption, we will literally have months of advanced notice. The evolution of "Big Data" and AI (eh, unsupervised machine learning really with multi-tiered statistical methods) combined with multiple observations of the events preceding multiple volcanic eruptions elsewhere has improved the window of prediction drastically.

Yellowstone erupting is actually a big fucking deal. There's literally nobody on Earth, except terrorists that want it to erupt. "DA JOOS" certainly don't want it to erupt, since well, the world economy will grind to a halt as the ash plume will block out the Sun on a global scale for MONTHS, killing crops world wide, and causing mass starvation. Trust me, everyone is taking this shit VERY seriously.

Probably the nearest river. Though it'd probably need to be filtered first.

Does /pol/ happen to know any water filter salesmen?
>>
>>138392497
Yes but you seem to be implying they are pumping water in and out of the chamber when they are just running a pipe in the ground near it. I don't even think we have materials that could run a pipe in the actual caldera.

It'll became cheaper over time as the plant pays itself off. All that is needed is water, the radiated geothermal heat will last for many millennia. However for this to work well, they need to scale the amount of plants, think hundreds, not one.
