Furthermore, it is also a piece of art and an actual effort was put into it. No real monument should ever be destroyed, even if it is "offensive" to you. I personally, on my behalf, wouldn't even demolish Eltsin monuments, no matter how disgusting and shameful it is for my countrymen.

They also removed most of the signs of communism, like random red stars hanging about, or plaques for communist writers/artists, as well as renamed any commie inspired streets/towns/villages - usually to the dismay of their inhabitants. I think there was one instance where a group of elderly veterans or whoever got beat up trying to stop the demolishing of some statue. Communists can go to hell for all i care, but this kind of zealotry is a tad bit overboard.
