I didn't understand that either until recently. The autor of the book Crowds and Power describes the jews as a "retrieving crowd", their whole identity is around the disaspora, the pascoa is the center of their religion, the myth of running away gives them their unity and power. That is why even spread they keep their unity and also why they try to sabotage national identities.

Given them a country and there will no myth of diaspora anymore, they have a place to go back to. Even if some remain in other countries, they are just normal imigrants now. The source of their myth and unity is destroyed.
