Know that Zen that Watts speaks so fondly of is essentially obscure on purpose. It's founded on two main pillars; sitting meditation practice and koans which are glorified riddles. The riddles are nonsense half the time and are supposed to provoke an enlightenment, a flash of insight, a spontaneous insight, when combined with the meditation.

In the western tradition we'd call that wasting your fucking time. Remember that contemplation has strong roots here and is essentially striving for the same mindfulness eastern meditation does but with less abstractions around it. Even stoics recommended "self-reflection" daily.

These are all many paths leading up the same mountain. Also be aware that psychedelics can with some responsible use get you to those meditative breakthroughs they talk about much faster. If you're not ready for them or use them irresponsibly it's a wasted experience. But with psilocybe you get to where transcendental meditation tries to take you over decades of study.

I'm feeling let down from all the books I've been reading. I feel like my time would have been better taking action and writing than reading. Right now I'm going back to the New Testament and "Manual for Spiritual Warfare". I just shuffle through until I find something that enlivens my soul. "To live is Christ, and the die is gain." It's so easy for me to forget that we're called not to simply know, and love, Christ, but to suffer fully with Him. We're called to be crucified with Christ. Our suffering is glorious.

I'm also reading through King Lear but I have to stop every few lines to look at what the words mean. So far I really like Kent.
