Simple question: in what year did 'something' with the internet change? Answer on impulse and don't think too much. I will reveal the result of my findings if this thread gets replies.
>>
2008 or 2009 or so
>>
>>138252202
Whenever mobile phones became widespread and the internet became infested with normalfags.
>>
That's too broad of a question, if you ask somebody in their 30's they would probably tell you 2002, if you ask somebody in their 20's they will probably tell you 2011.

Something just died,im not sure what. Maybe it was anonymity
>>
>>138252202
2010-2011 when Facebook started to gain more ground, then Google tried to copy it but failed but they saw the golden data potential.
>>
whatever year social media came on to the scene. as far as i know myspace was the first
>>
>>138252388
2006 was the year everything started to change, 2007 it greatly accelerated and by 2009 the internet pretty much became what it is today. The biggest culprits to blame are Facebook, YouTube, smartphones, and r*ddit.

Nope, I'm 29. Using internet since 1997. Until 2009/2010 Internet had this same "anonymous spirit". We had Instant Messengers, a lot of discussion boards that are dead now.. So, the internet begin to change when ((they)) centralized it. Wanna talk to somebody? Better go to facebook, fill up your entire name, habits, location and so on.

You're too dumb to use a fake profile?
>>
>>138252753
i was thinking smart phones. i got out of college in 2006, and for my job right after i had a smart phone. and i really don't remember many people having them, or i'm not remembering what a motorola q or whatever old blackberry was capable of so i figure it became a couple years later, and mostly because women started using it for shopping and bullshit and they just poisoned every corner

2008/9 when mobiles and tablets took over.
Whole thing was app(le)ified and web went to shit.

When people migrated from myspace to facebook and stopped going outside.

What a fake profile would do?
I use it on discord / twitter. Sometimes Facebook asks for pictures of your ID if you create a fake profile and it gets detected.
>>
I mean, it has changed a lot during this decade especially. I would say 2009/2010.

1998.

Until then the focus was on interaction between users. The Internet consisted almost entirely of forums, chat rooms, email lists, collaborative websites, and personal websites. The big push to commercialize the Web marked the beginning of the Internet's usability as a non-participatory medium and its ability to attract people who had nothing to contribute.

Much later, the people who commercialized the Web figured out that just about anyone can be lured into contributing anyway, and thus was born the blog. Then when blogs were overrun by people who could actually write, take pictures, and otherwise consistently create content, the people who couldn't do any of that moved on YouTube. Turns out people won't read low quality content, but they will watch just about anything, so people who really had nothing to say found a home on YouTube. And then there's the rest of social media, where a selfie, a pithy rant, or a repost of someone else's cartoon can bring both fame and a lasting feeling of self-worth.

All of this is pretty terrible, if you ask me, though it certainly doesn't sound terrible just looking at what I just wrote. It sounds pretty cool. Christ though it's awful.

well it seems the thread reached its limit. i have nothing revolutionary to say guys, i just picked up that there's one specific year that holds great psychological importance to people. while not stated here ITT, the most mentioned year is 2007 actually. i suspect that understanding what exactly changed in that year is cruical to restoring that *something* that has been lost. all very vague yet and i dont understand it all either. if i was to sum up my thoughts so far i would say that life got simpler, more streamlined from that point on. a consequence of the appereance of the smartphone, the start of the social media internet, the effects of making life more efficient after the great recession. in the end most people confirm my theory: a happy life does not result from a simple life. in other words: 2007 was the fulcrum of our current era, the start of the "efficient era". a paradigm shift if you will. perhaps im just chasing ghosts, but i believe some great solution hides behind my suspicions.
>>
2007, easy

First impulse was to say 2010. Then I thought a bit more and will settle for 2012-13.

2007 thats when the influx of newfags came here bc some faggots were breaking rules 1 & 2 on youtube comment sections. smart phones directly lead to the the internet becoming easy to access for "normies" and that was the first nail in the coffin for this site.
>>
2013
>>
2002 was the first noticeable shift and then 2007 was the big one
>>
>>138252202
I'd say 2012. But logically speaking it would be the year in which social media started filtering results and recommendation to cater to your particular tastes based on your recorded history, effectively dividing the internet based on ideologies and turning almost every website into an echochamber.

~2009.

Here's why: 4chan use exploded. It went from 5 million users to ~10 million users. I mean, this stupid tagboard shit Moot put together with his mom's credit card and translated 2cha code went from 0 to 1 million in its first months or something, but 5 million additional unique user gain in a single year?
4chan is a unique format. It's not like facebook or reddit. It's almost impossible to get any external reward for posting. Anonymous posting on something that won't survive 24 hours for what? the USER becomes impermanent, but MEMES take on a life of their own.
Memes are obviously older than 2003. But the cocktail of memes + quadratically growing anonymous user base created something there's absolutely no model for.

At this point, the internet became the engine of change of the world's zeitgeist, and 4chan was the beating heart of the internet. By extension through proxy everything generated on 4chan was making its way to through the entire rest of the internet and into the real world. 4chan was neat back in 2005, and a lot of the /pol/ newcomers weren't around back then to compare, but as neat as it was simply not energized enough to influence the real world. In 2005 4chan's energies were simply internal sharing with SA and other imageboard sites. In 2008, 4chan hacked Sarah Palin's emails and 4chan as an emergent entity had begun sticking its toes into the real world. By 2010, the 'something' with the internet had changed. By 2016 meme magic had become real.

I think there have been a few different eras of the internet. The 90s felt very different to the early 00s which are different to now.

Probably the most fun i had on the Internet was from 99-04 that was a real wild west time. It was becoming popular enough that there was a lot of activity on forums but people acted crazy there was no established internet behavior

The roll out of the big social media platforms changed the vibe.

iPhone was released and marketed to normies, now literally everyone bar the shittiest shitholes in africa had easy access to the internet and a perceived reason to use it (social media)
>2.5th (?) time the internet died: ~2012
This is about the time that so-called "user created content" started becoming seriously big. Now not only are normies the vast majority of internet users, but they also control the vast majority of content.
>third time the internet died: soon (10 years at most)
Free speech completely impeded by corporations to further liberal agenda, and destruction of western society as we know it. Brave new world.

Around 2006 - 2007 probably. At around the same time Tempora started to be rolled out, coincidentally or not. Maybe also around the time when google analytics started slowing down page loading times hugely, before people worked out how to black hole their requests. In short, when large-scale web surveillance became a thing.
