Because many of them were authoritarians all along. In the 30s many reactionary fascists disguised themselves as friends of the working class by incorporating a few of socialism's anti capitalist rhetoric, but in the end turned out to be very pro ruling class.

Libertarian and authoritarian arent contradictory, libertarian and totalitarian are. An "enlightened despot" could pursue a libertarian policy, just as they could pursue a totalitarian one. Authoritarian refers to the power of the ruler (can be a single person or a class) in the system, totalitarian refers to how expansive the government is.

Its difficult because all these words have ambiguity in their use. We call what amounts to authoritarian bureaucratic rule today "liberalism" and we call laissez-faire liberalism "conservative".

I make these kind of abstract points because its helpful to explain the on the face of it bizzarre libertarian -> reactionary pipeline thats existed for the past decade or so now. It can be summarized basically by Peter Thiel's statement "I no longer believe freedom and democracy are compatible". Obviously if that sounds like a contradiction to you its because he's not using the terms the same way you think of them.
