I know Nathan Damigo (the last name BTW actually is his step-father's; he actual birth last name is Lodge).

His story is pretty sad if actually know it. While he comes from money, he's not some spoiled rich kid racist like Richard Spencer but a seriously fucked up kid desperately trying to find something.

Nathan's bio dad was an emotionally abusive bastard who cheated on Nathan's mom (a devote Fundie Christian) and drove her to leave him.

She moved to the West Coast, where she hooked up to a guy named Mike Damigo.

Mike was a former marine turned cop, from a family where pretty much EVERYONE who was male was expected to serve in the military, then join the police force afterwords.

Mike Damigo was super conservative and began grooming Nathan from day one to follow the Damigo footsteps. Nathan was eager to do whatever his stepdad wanted; his bio dad HATED him and basically only allowed him to go back east for visitation, so he could pawn him off onto his paternal grandparents (who DID care for him, and who never forgave their son for causing Nathan's mom to bail to the other side of the country).

Nathan's mom is a Fundie Christian but one of the good ones; however, she was a FIERCE helicopter parent when it came to mothering. His step-dad tolerated this, because Nathan was a slacker when he wasn't being guided by his parents to make something of himself.

Going into the military was the first mistake of Nathan's life; he was utterly unprepared for military life since he never had to deal with life without his mom hovering over him to tell him what to do. He was a loafer, but fell in with a good crowd, in terms of several veteran marines who decided to mentor him.

That was the second thing; as several of the marines who took Nathan under his wing ended up being killed while they were overseas in Iraq. Nathan, needless to say, lost his fucking mind and the trauma of actual combat/war fucked him up with PTSD and culminated in him attacking a guy because he had a flashback and thought he looked like an Iraqi.

Nathan's step-dad (who had friends that let him do a vanity column for a company catalog that sold USMC licensed merch) never quite forgave Nathan for fucking up when he got arrested. He had to quit the column he wrote and largely shirked away from his fellow Marine friends, out of shame and embarassment. This was compounded when Nathan's arrest and discharge from the Marines effectively meant that Nathan would NEVER get a law enforcement job, which was always going to happen due to his step-dad's overall plans for how his step-son's life should go.

Nathan's mom meanwhile was utterly traumatized by her son going crazy pants and basically dedicated herself to helping get her son "sane" again. Nathan's bio-dad basically had disowned him by this point. And his step-dad only stood by Nathan because he truly loved his mother and was willing to swallow his own anger and rage at Nathan for her sake.

Nathan ended up in jail and ended up transferred to Oklahoma due to California jails being crowded. This did not stop Nathan's mom from resuming helicopter parenting; she basically pushed Nathan to take classes in school and (in hopes of raising awareness) whored out his story to HBO, in a documentary on PTSD.

In prison, Nathan fell in with white supremacists largely out of protection. Nathan was still severely fucked up at this point mentally, plus his mom constantly visiting and buying him shit, pretty much made him a mark for the older convicts.

Nathan is a good guy, but his greatest sin is that he desperately wants approval and affection from older men. His step-father was emotionally distant; firm in guiding his son but lacking warmth. His bio-dad was a shit and most of his male classmates in school laughed at him for being a mamma's boy. Some of us used to think he was gay or at the very least, the type of guy who would gladly go gay if another man showed him any warmth or affection. Anyway; Nathan was an easy mark for WP types, who used his desperate need for male friendship to convert him to the WP cause. In prison, conversion to WP groups takes many forms: protection, extortion, or manipulation. Nathan had access to money via his mom and was willing to be generous with his commissary and other perks to people that said they wanted to be his friend. For all of his trash talking and bitch punching, Nathan is pretty shy and will latch onto anyone who shows even the slightest interest in being his friend; hence his relationship with Richard Spencer.


Needless to say, his mom and step-dad were horrified at his conversion towards becoming a WP type. His step-father basically tolerates Nathan being openly racist and shit for the sake of his wife (who he loves unconditionally) and his mom tolerates Nathan being racist, out of fear that if she rejects him, then he'll end up leaving home and end up with Richard Spencer or worse company.

And how do I fit into this? I am a close family friend who has known Nathan since he was young. I'm one of the few friends Nathan has from before his WP conversion, that hasn't turned against him. We still talk but I don't agree with what he is preaching these days, which makes him sad. I've talked to his parents in secret and we kind of agree that Nathan MIGHT be saved from his current downward spiral trajectory, but he's going to have to reach rock bottom before he repents.
