Here's a better question. Why doesn't the US allow Taiwan to return to China on terms similar to the Hong Kong model with a large degree of economic and political autonomy? What interest does the US REALLY have in Taiwan? If China is to be a rising power then why not "clear the decks" and settle all issues that might get in the way of a productive relationship between the US and China?
