The confederacy fought solely for states rights (as opposed to the federal government imposing its will upon the people) and for the rights of states to end slavery and make/enforce laws on their own terms. 6% of whites owned slaves, 28% of blacks owned slaves and over half of the new arrivals from Europe to the colonies were slaves.
